Summer Shopping Haul

Oooooooo Summer Sales are everywhere friends!!!

Since shopping in Boston was a total bust (click here Boston trip summary) … I was dying for some much-needed retail therapy!

Screen Shot 2016-07-23 at 3.26.06 PM

Lucky for me that I happened to stumble upon some crazy sales over the last few weeks here in The6ix.

Here’s my recap from those Shopping Hauls:

TATYANA BOUTIQUE

Just look at my receipt below from an unexpected shopping trip I made last week – when I got an email from Tatyana Boutique saying that it was THE LAST day to get 50% off everything in store INCLUDING already reduced items!!

What did I buy you’re wondering…?

Here’s a quick snapshot of the frocks that followed me home ….

A total of 3 Tatyana Dresses came home with me:  Floral & Lace (left) $60 and the Golden Tassel (right) $17!!!!!

That gold dress doesn’t look like much on the hanger.  But it’s vintage reproduction at its very best – hugging curves just right and landing at the perfect height without any alterations.

I’ve already worn it to work!

It’s not every day you find a dress with office-appropriate tassels 😉ipadIreneGomes1

And the 3rd dress I got was THIS one!!!!   I have no idea when or where I’m gonna wear this …. but it was just magical…followed by ooo’s & ahh’s upon stepping out of the change room.

Perhaps its time I started my jazz singing career just to wear this dress nightly!!! 😉

This gown was over $200.  But with this amazing sale, it came home with me for $60!!!!!

Screen Shot 2016-07-23 at 2.42.32 PM

This dress has an intricate spider webbed, sexy sweetheart neckline and with a cascading waist with a bow detail in this form fitted silhouette.

A sexy v-shaped back leads to a  zip closuer and ends with a striking slit up the back.  And even at my petite height (when worn with heels) it’ll be floor-length fantastic!!! ❤

FOREVER21+

I try to avoid doing too much shopping at Forever21+ … for fear of looking like every other plus sized babe in the city.

But just look at these sweet colours and patterns!!!  YUP!  They needed to be mine!

IMG_1875

Foxes on a simple sleeved, belted swing dress!  $33

Summer Orange Maxi with ruffles! $22

A semi-sheer maxi dress featuring an all over floral print, a buttoned front, a V-neckline, an elasticized waist, and 3/4 sleeves with buttoned cuffs. $33

Stay tuned to the blog for specific outfit posts styling each of these ones soon! 😉

PENNINGTON’S

OH MAN!!!  I’ve been ranting about bra’s and bra-blems for a few posts on the blog.  With the CAD$ being in the can…it has been preventing me from cross-boarder shopping for over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders.

Being a busty gal…finding my cup size here in Toronto just isn’t affordable. :/

But then … Penningtons had a crazy, stupid sale…making ALL THAT YOU SEE HERE $22 each!!!  Unheard of price for ladies of the big titty committee..right?

IMG_1876

Now, although this retail claims to have G & H cup sizes, they rarely seem to have them when I’m shopping.  Seems they are super popular and sell out immediately.  Sigh..

I managed to find sister sizes (i.e. 44DDDDDD … LOL! you get what I mean) to help compensate for band:cup difference.  At this price point…I was determine to make them work!!! 🙂

Oh, I picked up 2 sweet nightys too…for $15 each!

STREET VENDORS & OUTDOOR MARKETS

Summer brings with it the many outdoor festivals, markets and other fun where vendors are selling their wears street-side.  And fantastic deals and finds can be found!!!

I’m all about the hats in the summer… sun protection is very important … especially for keeping the once face sun-spot free 😉

Hats! Hats! Hats! Sold at Kensington Market.

Of all the many hats I own, I didn’t have a simple black and white one. So when I found this adorable side-bow-button detail on this one….it had to be mine.

$10 – and basically goes with everything!  Whoop! Whoop!

There you have it friends!  You’ve gotten the inside scoop on all the newest pieces in my closet.

Were you able to take advantage of any of these deals yourselves?

Got any favourites from what I’ve showcased in this haul?  Tell me about it in the comment section below.

Exploring Beantown – Boston

Sorry for the absence friends – I’ve been on vacation and away from the blog.

And then summer fun got in the way, and I’ve been out living my life instead of writing about it 😛

But I’m back!!! And ready to give you a recap of all I did in the lovely city of BOSTON!

Screen Shot 2016-07-23 at 3.26.06 PM

Week 1 was dedicated to my love for Lindyhop!  I signed up for a week-long dance camp that was celebrating their 20th anniversary of BEANTOWN!!

BEANTOWN DANCE CAMP

beantown-banner-logo
This was an intensive week of non-stop dance with workshops all day, everyday to improve your dancing skills.  Taught by amazing dance instructors from all over.  Followed by nightly live bands to dance to until the wee hours of the morning!

Here’s a quick run down of those live musical acts:

Truth:  When I signed up for this trip, I figured I’d have a ton of other Toronto dancers going with me.  But with the CAD$ being so low…that wasn’t the case.  And then I had a lower back injury that led to me doing  very little dancing all winter.  I started to chicken-out and was worried I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everyone else at this camp. :/

What if they were all amazing dancers and they discover that I’m a dancing fraud!?

What if they’re all super young and I’ll be the oldest granny of the group?!

What if I sit all alone for every meal with no friends all week!? :/  The Fear Was Real!

As the travel date got closer and closer… turns out that there were only two other Toronto dancers heading to Beantown …and we were all arriving at different times.

So I forced myself to be brave, packed my electric heating pad, a sh!t-ton of Ibuprofen and muscle pain ointment and off I went to spend over a week at a dance camp, in a city where I know nobody… dun dun dunnnn!

I had to audition to get into an appropriate “track level” for all your classes that week.  Terrifying?  Yes!

Result:  Turns out I’m an intermediate dancer!

This was the first time I participated in a group routine and performed in public!!!

I’m happy to report – we  didn’t mess up once on stage!!!  Woot! Woot! 😀

Me and my routine dance partner, Eddie

Here’s the routine.  We were nervous that we’d screw it up…so we claimed a spot in the back row…far right, if you’re looking for me.

Look for my especially twirly skirt. 😉  Click here to read about my outfit if you’re curious.

I was way too busy having the time of my life … that I didn’t take too many pictures during my stay at camp.

Luckily I’ve managed to find a few of me taken at the fun photobooth the last night of camp – celebrating its 20th anniversary!

Visit my Instagram channel to see all the camp adventures + video clips of a few lessons and a mini private concert with Norma Miller – Lindy Hop swing dancer known as the “Queen of Swing”

DOWNTOWN BOSTON

Camp ended on a Thursday…and with the long weekend here (Canada Day), I decided to stick around Boston and explore the city solo.

My hostel – HI Boston – was right next to the Boston Common – pretty much right in the heart of downtown.

I slept the day away – my body was exhausted after 7-days of dance.  But in the evening, I walked around on my own and found myself in the Public Gardens just as the sun was setting…

Gorgeous pink skies in the Public Gardens, Boston

And at the other side of this the park… I stumbled upon this landmark…

“Where Everybody Knows Your Name!!”

Naturally I had to stop in and have a cuppa Calm Chowda at the bar and channel my inner Norm. 😉

Friday I was a proper tourist!  I was determined to maximize the day AND night!!!

What better way to explore a new city than on foot!  I discovered a fab lil’ company called Free Tours by Foot which does just that!  These tours are among the best things to do in Boston, taking you through many of the city’s most famous neighbourhoods. Best part: there is no charge to take our tours.  Meaning you may pay what you feel the tour was worth after the tour is completed, thus ensuring that your tour guide must strive to give his or her best on every tour.  Win. Win.

What I saw on the Freedom Trail Walking Tour:

  • Massachusetts State House
  • Park Street Church
  • Granary Burying Ground
  • King’s Chapel
  • Old South Meeting House
  • Old Corner Bookstore
  • Old State House
  • Boston Massacre Site
  • Faneuil Hall

In addition to all these historic sites … I managed to drive by the Harvard Campus at night …. took the T-train on a pub crawl to some uptown Boston Bars…. checked out the local Lindyhop Social…. brought the house down with newly made friends while Karaoke’ing in Cambridge … caught some live jazz over brunch…and even had a bit of a romantic interlude that weekend to boot! 😉

Overall, my trip to Boston was da.bomb.com! ❤

It’s a fantastic city – super green – with lots to see and do.  Sadly, I dedicated an entire day to shopping and came up empty-handed.  Nothing wow’d me enough to spend my money.  Nothing.  Very, very disappointing. 😦shoppingafrica

Who’s been to Boston?  Were there some “must do’s” that I missed?  Now that you’ve read about my adventures, would you take a trip out there too?

Tell me your thoughts in the comment section below.

Thanks for reading. xo

Suzy Shier +

Suzy Shier is a Canadian retailer of women’s fashion with over 140 stores across the country.

When I was a teen, I remember shopping there as an in-betweenie size 15, I would be able to find a rare gem at a price I could afford on my minimum wage salary at the time.  But, in my adult years I haven’t stepped a foot into one of their stores until the recent news:  Suzy Shier was launching a plus size line! 😀

HAZZA! It’s about freakin’ time, right!?

There happens to be a Suzy Shier close to my office in downtown Toronto  … so, I stopped by at lunch to peruse their offerings.  I’ve got to say, the prints and patterns I was seeing were lovely, bright and fresh.  Perfect for summer!!  Thrilled, I began looking for my sizes – plus sizes.

Only to discover that there were none to be found. 😦

Screen Shot 2015-06-03 at 11.24.22 AM
Some of the Regular Size options currently available online (www.suzysheir.com)
A shopgirl informed me that only a select few locations carry the larger sizes, and that the downtown core wasn’t one of them.  She did, however, let me know that some of the more ‘popular’ styles I see on the floor for regular sizes will be made in the plus sizes!

Feeling less inconvenienced by this news … I returned to my desk to launch their website to see what lovely fashions could be mine and where I needed to get them from.

As you can see from these two images => offerings for regular sizes vs. plus sizes aren’t nearly as “fun” for summer.

PLUS SIZE selection – mostly black and white….le sigh
Nonetheless, I thought I should visit a location and see the plus size options up close and personally, as often you never really get a good feel for an item until you’ve actually tried it on yourself.

Using the handy-dandy store locator I discovered this:  of the 140 stores3 are located in Toronto (First Canadian Place, Gerrard Square and Duffrin Mall) – and of those only 1 carries the plus size line.  Grrrrr…   Lucky for me, The Duffrin Mall is in my hood so getting to there isn’t a big deal.

Suzy Shier @ The Duffrin Mall

At first glance to the very back corner of the store seems dedicated to the plus size options – that looks colourful and plentiful.  And as you can see … the prices are just right!

Suzy Shier+ section of the Duffrin Mall location
But upon closer inspection, the pieces available on the floor didn’t really grab my attention – most were not my taste and most did not quite fit my body right.  And I found that I needed to try on all three sizes (1x, 2x and 3x) as the sizing really changed from one item to the next.

My top two coveted items I had hoped to find in store from their website were the following:

063046800921_Yellow_0jpg_1 063046871380_Black_0jpg_1

Sadly, the Gingham shirt dress was nowhere to be found in store 😦

What I Didn’t Buy

Ok, before we get into all the pieces I tried on — let’s talk about the change-room situation at this location.  Yikes!

They are pretty narrow, with one sad hook.  Which ultimately forces you to make a decision: do you hang up your beloved purse and the clothes you are wearing  OR the clothes you’d like to try on currently on hangers?

Oh!  And to top it all off: no mirrors inside the wee room. Which means you must step out of the room, and strategically position its door while making sure it doesn’t lock you out of the room that now houses all your stuff,  all in an effort to see your reflection on a mirror that hangs on THE BACK of your change-rooms door.  #brutal

Tsk. Tsk.  Poor planning Suzy Shier @ Duffrin Mall.

And what’s a girl to do in those moments when the outfit-tried-on is a complete disaster and you’d prefer not sharing the embarrassing moment with others by stepping outside of that room for a glance at that mirror?  I can only imaging the number of unpurchased items simply because ladies wanted to avoid stepping out of the change-rooms in questionably fitting try-ons.

I had the added obstacle of having to compete with a rack of returns that cluttered up the narrow hallway between change-rooms in order to catch a glimpse of my reflection as I emerged from my change-room.  Le sigh…

Here’s what caught my attention enough to want to try on:

IMG_7781
Faux wrap aztek printed dress – I’m wearing a 3x …way too big on me and am clearly not impressed by the baggy boob situation. LOL!
This navy scuba dress with beige lace wasn’t bad.  But it wasn’t making me excited about it either… Meh! I dunno…

IMG_7778
Scuba sheath dress with lace – I’m wearing a 3x – $30
l did find the dress I was spotted online.  It was on the sale rack (woot! woot!) but sadly it had a few pulled threads and only sizes 1x and 2x remained.

I would have liked to try on the 3x to see if it fit me a bit better – I’m not a fan of the boob-mashing-situation going on below.

IMG_7785
Diamond print jacquard skater dress — I’m wearing 2x – $30
Overall, I was a bit disappointed – especially because the shopgirl assured me that the plus sizes would be the same prints and styles shown in their regular line.

Which was not the case at all.  And then to find out that the only Toronto location had cramped quarters for trying on items AND that they didn’t have all the sizes and styles as their website displayed for the plus line.  Le sigh… 😦

What I Bought!

On my way out, I did find a size 2x in the faux wrap aztec printed dress.  But the thought of having to go back into those cramped change-rooms AGAIN…. ew. No Thanks.

I guesstimated that I’d be safer to purchase this item a size smaller, and if worst case scenario… I’d simply return it if it didn’t fit right once I got it home. Right? Right!

BIG FYI  #1:  Suzy Shier has a strict Exchange Only policy (14-days).  Absolutely zero Returns for cash back. **insert eye-roll emoji here**

BIG FYI #2:  If you are hoping to do an exchange, know that you can ONLY exchange plus sized items to Suzy Shier stores with plus size options.

Yup.  So, before you decide to spend your cold hard cash on a piece from this retailer, make sure you REALLY want it and that you like the way it fits, cuz there is no turning back once you fork out the $$.  And with the sizing being so different from one piece to the next, ordering online without trying anything on IS NOT A WISE CHOICE here, don’t ya think?

Lucky for me, the 2x I purchased without trying on, fit like a dream!  Even the exposed long zip down the back even lays flat from the top of neck to tail of hip!  Very exciting news for my curvy self.

The neckline was still a bit big…or rather more revealing than I’d like. Thank goodness for safety pins for a quick fix 😉

Have any of you shopped Suzy Shier+ yet?  Have you had much luck with fit, selection and style available to you?  What are your thoughts on the pieces I tried on?  Did I make the right choice?

Let me know in the comments section below.

I wore this number out this past weekend for BuzzontheBridge, part of 100in1Day event in Toronto –>

What a perfect sunny Saturday to be dancing Lindy Hop on the Wallace Bridge, followed by soaking up the rays with mimosas and Caesars on a patio! 🙂

Shopping Haul: Toronto Premium Outlets

Last week after an innocent brunch with a new friend, we decided to hit the Danier Leather Friends & Family one-day sale.  In an effort to avoid downtown locations, we thought we’d take a drive out to Halton Hills for Toronto Premium Outlets instead.

And this was the result…

IMG_5544

I know! I know!  I’ve got a problem!  Buuuuuut when I explain how each purchase came about, I’m sure you’ll agree that they HAD to be made. 🙂

Here we go…

Remember when my heart was torn between which furry purse to buy …

IMG_5545

Well, I found it on sale …the very last one (which scored me an extra 10% off at Aldo).   Clearly, it had been waiting for me!!!

IMG_5555

ADIDAS

I haven’t bought myself a new pair of sneakers in maybe 5-years.  These hot pink laces totally caught my eye.  Tagged at $110, marked down to $60 PLUS, for today only they were $40% off!!!  That’s basically free… 🙂

IMG_5553
Oh man…those hot pink laces are gonna make me move super fast! I’m sure of it! 🙂

As we continued looking for the Danier.…we came across these babies in the window of NINE WEST:

IMG_5552
These lovelies are uber comfy and made of suede …on sale for $99 + 20% off at the cash!

And then there was a giant sale sign that forced us into ROCKPORT …where I found these basic black lace ups for $29!!!!!!! I’d be losing money if I just left them behind, right?  RIGHT!

IMG_5554

And then finally we made it to our original destination: DANIER LEATHER!

I have to say that for an “outlet” this Danier location didn’t really have ‘outlet pricing’.  Buuuuuut with the 30% off the lowest ticketed price with the Friends & Family day sale, the sting at the counter wasn’t too bad.

IMG_5546Picked up two beautiful pairs of leather gloves: brown with rabbit fur cuffs and black weaved leather … both of which feel like butta! And this lovely black with gold hardware purse marked down to $50!

I was too busy shopping to take Outfit of the Day pictures.  But did manage to get this one shot:

IMG_5542
What I Wore: Danier moto jacket; Black n’ white plaid poncho, Reitmans; Leather cuff leggings, Forever21+; Wine coloured sweater dress, Reitmans; Studded flats, Payless and my MK cross body purse.

Can’t wait to incorporate these new pieces into looks – stay tuned to the blog for those outfit posts!

If you haven’t made a visit to Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills yet…I highly suggest you do!  PS:  They have a Hudson Bay Company Outlet!! My hands (and credit card) were too full for me to explore this time around.  Guess that means I’ll have to stop by again and soon! 😉
