Holiday Double Feature: Sparkle & Shine

We’re mid-week in our special Holiday Double Feature collaboration with Cassie of Style Cassentials.

What holiday series would be complete without talking about Sparkle & Shine? That’s exactly what we’re gonna focus on today. 🙂

There is A LOT of sequins in holiday wear this year. Don’t get me wrong…I love me some sequins!!! But everyone else is gonna be wearing it right now, and I would rather do something different this time around.

For this holiday look, I decided to let the sparkle and shine show in my accessories, rather an my entire frock.

I found this peplum dress last year from AdditionElle and have come up with many uses for it, like say THE South Asian Princess Leia…. click here to see what I mean 😉

There is just something about wearing crisp winter whites that really steps up the glamour of an outfit. I wanted to use the ‘sparkle and shine’ factor sparingly for this holiday look.

This amazing sliver-gold-jewelled belt was found in a lovely boutique on West Queen West called Fashion Crimes (NOTE: this shop has recently closed it’s doors and will be reopening as a bespoke boutique elsewhere in Toronto in 2015).

I matched it up with this jewelled bracelet (Aldo Accessories) and gold drop earrings (Your Big Sister’s Closet) to jazz up this holiday outfit. And lastly, I decided to keep the heels a simple nude pump (Payless), to not distract from the rest of the look.

Getting It REIT

I have to say that I’ve been pleasantly surprised by all the sale items in Reitmans these days. My entire outfit (minus the accessories) in this post has been assembled from the pieces I’ve picked up at from their Clearance Sale racks.

The easiest way to make your Summer pieces more Fall appropriate isn’t to ditch them altogether, but to come up with new ways to wear them.

Mark downs were as follows:

‘Love’ sweater $19 …. Black n’ White striped maxi skirt $19 ….Wine moto jacket $59

I picked up this wine moto jacket, that your advice PPMeow readers, when it was on sale (at $75). Buuuuut it was further reduced upon my last visit, and I managed to get a price adjustment for the difference. BOOM!

Aren’t these socks great!! They were birthday prezzies – pink owls – aren’t they a “Hoot” 😉

I wore this outfit on a mid-week date night.

I’m really diggin’ this maxi skirt with the high side-slit… Casual yet sexy at the same time….to show off my legs. I love my legs! 😉

Sadly, I lost by one stroke. Meh … I let him win 😉

Ok friends….seems like Fall came and went in a blink of an eye and we’ve already been thrown into Winter weather. I thought before we start focusing on winter wear, we’d take a look at some of the trending colours and vibes in Fall fashion on the blog.

Fuchsia & Faux Furs

I’ve been doing my very best to avoid wearing ‘wintery’ things just yet, avoiding bulky sweaters and a giant winter coat at all costs.

That’s why I really loved this two-toned, short-sleeved, light-weight polka-dotted sweater from Reitmans. I love me some colour, so I decided to go with bright bottoms and bright jewellery, keeping my shoes simple.

I finally got myself a haircut – waddya think of my new do?

These pics aren’t the best to show it off…as sadly the new cut went right into a furry hat, as it was quite cold this evening.

Since us Torontonians will have to endure Winter for, what will feel like 8-months of the year, I’m avoid wearing a proper winter coat for as long as I possibly can. I went for this double-breasted button herringbone jacket instead. For other looks in this jacket click here.

I also got to unveil my new leather gloves I picked up from the Danier Leather Friends n’ Family sale. Mixing in expensive pieces with non-expensive pieces, to give me an overall sophisticated, business casual look.

Meow! Meow! Meow!

A few weeks ago I made a bunch of cute Meow! tees to sell at the blogger closet sale, BIG Deal Toronto (stay tuned for a blogpost recap on that event soon).

I love, love love these tees!!!! 100% Cotton. Pre-Shunk. V-neck. They are fabulous! I’m partial to the white one, because the PINK stands out more. But for Fall, I thought I’d go for an ALL noir look, and have put together TWO looks with these Meow! tees for your reading and viewing pleasure 🙂

#1: Meow! Rocker…

Keeping it real simple with a black on black polka dot pencil skirt (Old Navy), open-toed black leather booties (Aldo), and my moto leather jacket (Danier).

I couldn’t help myself … chose to break up the ALL black look with a hot pink studded belt (Your Big Sister’s Closet) and purple leggings (Old Navy) for extra Fall warmth.

#2: Meow! Cozy…

Fall is all about sweater weather! So to take this look into a more cozy vibe….simply replaced the leather jacket for a tri-toned open cardi sweater (Winners) and did up my hot pink gold studded belt (Your Big Sister’s Closet) over top of it, to cinch in my waist and create a nice casual hour-glass shape. And of course, my paten leather stripped Kate Spade purse to complete both looks.

Although not plus-sized, this fashionable petite babe Tammy, totally did it right for a casual sophisticated Sunday Brunch vibe in her Meow! tee. Don’t you think? Bravo Tammy… “me f*uckin’ ow” indeed! 😉

Denim Daze

For the past few years I’ve totally been a skirts and dresses kinda gal. I very rarely ever wear jeans.

Don’t get me wrong – I love the look of denim! It’s just not the first think I of wearing. But for Fall they are pretty perfect for a causal vibe. (Click here to see how I incorporated denim previously this week.)

I picked up this faux hoodie-denim jacket from The Hudson Bay Co. this spring from the Jessica Simpson Collection.

I wasn’t sure if mixing dark with light denim would work — but I like how it turned out. Since I kept the colours pretty simple throughout the outfit, adding the pink plaid pop of colour in the footwear and scarf really worked out nicely 🙂 (Click here to see the shoes and here for the hoodie-jacket in other looks)

This jacket doesn’t quite keep me warm enough for the cool Fall temperatures — so a hat not only helps keep the heat in, but also helps facilitate me not brushing or doing my hair! #winning

Playful Plaid

Last month I ran a special 7-day long Fall Double Feature collaboration series with Style Cassentials, where we explored and put our own twists on upcoming trends for Fall.

One of the big trends this season is being Mad for Plaid! Today I’m taking a more playful approach to plaid 🙂

There has been a sudden spike in Toronto temperatures lately, which means getting into full on Fall garb on 20+ degree days, just doesn’t make sense. So for today’s outfit of the day I decided to wear a sheer plaid shirt, with leggings for an easy, casual look.

Typically early mornings and evenings tend to be cooler – quick. So in an effort to combat the sudden dips in temps … this light jean jacket and wooly wonderful-ness of this infinity scarf are perfect solutions! 🙂

Fall Double Feature: Sweater Glamour

I hope you’ve been following my series in collaboration with Cassie from Style-Cassentials. We’re discussing fall trends this week – if you missed any of my previous posts from this special Double Feature, you can check them out here.

Today we are talking about cozy, comfy, cuddly Sweater Glamour!

Last year, I ended up buying a few sweater dresses during end-of-season sales, so I never really got a chance to maximize wearing them. They are PERFECT for the Fall …

What I love best about them is the fact that they are warm enough to allow you to leave home without a proper jacket. I picked up this red caplet from Jack Lux vintage and costume pop-up shop on West Queen West. (A few of my Toronto Vintage Society sisters have been styling their window mannequins over the last few months, click here to read all about that). Adding this bright pop of colour really helps break up the taupes and browns of this outfit.

How I Got The Look: Snake print sweater dress from Old Navy; red caplet from Jack Lux vintage; brown leather purse from a vintage pop-up sale in The Juncton (small bowler bag from Guess); brown suède booties and double drop pearl earrings Reitmans and mother of pearl ring from my travels in Jaipur, India.

Dancing on the Pier

So long summer ….. the last Dancing on the Pier swing series at Harbourfront Centre took place last week. I kept my outfit of the day relatively simply, yet nautical …swing dancing by the water and all 🙂

What I wore: a striped high-neck tank (Reitmans); my navy anchor pencil skirt (Old Navy); and my red Airwaks (Payless)

I only got there for about an hour of solid dancing to the fab Toronto All-Star Big Band, who’s tunes revives the spirit, with the style and sounds of the 1930s, 40s and 50s – that golden age of the big bands.

As You Like It

Summer in Toronto is not complete without attending at least one Shakespere-in-the-Park ‘pay-what-you-can’ event! Pack a picnic, a blanket and a friend or two and it’s a perfect night of outdoor theatre. This year, CanadianStage is offering both comedy and tragedy in High Park. The shows will be playing on alternate nights through the summer. Last week, a gf via Facebook invite with a whopping 20+ of us who RSVPd a solid “YES, I’M IN”, were due to go. Which only yielded a total of three persons who – actually – physically – showed up to see the light-hearted As You Like It under the stars. (Why do people suck? Let’s leave that difficult to answer question for another day, shall we?) 😉

Witheth me doth be the most loveliest of maidens; healthy and svetly Sara and lusty and strong Natalie and in the bushes did lurk musical talents of a local school of young violinists. We were merry and gay and mosquito burdened. It was a joyous night had by all.

The performance doesn’t begin until about 8pm (dusk-ish). I got there an hour earlier to secure seats whilst the others were en route from their offices. The three of us managed to get fabulous dead-center seats of the graduated earth seating – cleverly lining our sit-on blanket with a $1 shower curtain to keep the damp out.

Dressing for summer evenings in Toronto hasn’t been easy this year with unseasonably cooler nights. Which means one must think about serious versatility when outfit planning to sit on one’s ass for 2+ hours, while the sun disappears and you’re left shivering cuddled under a blanket, while trying to stay cute. Plus, we can’t forget the inevitable use of a portapotty – dun dun dunnnnn.. 🙂

Keeping all of this in mind, here’s what I came up with to help keep me summer cute & comfortable while the sun was in full-force ,while protecting my freshly washed hair from bugs…

How I Got the Look: White patterned crop top and Tribal pants both from Forever21; Pink leather floral sandals (uber old from The Bay); Aviator sunnies from ElleHardware; Headscarf is vintage, picked it up at the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show earlier this year.

My headscarf was a last-minute addition to my outfit of the day. Since much of my outfit was a simple black N white colour scheme….I made sure that the scarf had loud vibrant colours in it – a Summery punch, if you will. With light rain threats in the forecast that evening, I simply wanted to protect my hair…but didn’t want to wear a hat and possibly be an irritating obstacle to another play-goer with the unfortunate luck of sitting behind me in the park. So this seemed to be the best solution.

I wanted to do wear a more sophisticated head wrap but alas, none of them looked right on my pea-head. Maybe, with practice, I’ll rock a few more of these techniques in the near future — thoughts? 🙂

Shakespeare isn’t everyones cupa tea … I never read/studied this particular play in school before, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it…and I didn’t even need to read the Coles Notes before hand. 🙂

There were some fantastic lines in this one…with some hilarious female characters, one of whom is AUDREY who won me over with the following line:

I am not a slut, though I thank the gods I am foul.

Over the past few years, I’ve been more of a “skirts and dresses kinda gal”….but for sitting outdoors at dusk with bugs and cool temperatures, and the possible use of a portapotty at some point in the evening, made pants the best option! These are lovely and light for summer-daytime, keeps your legs from getting bitten by bugs in the evening and comfortable enough to be sitting crossed legged cuddling on and under a blanket.
