Fall Double Feature: Mad for Plaid

Friday!  FriDAY!  FRIDAY!

We’ve made it through yet another workweek friends…and have gotten to nearly a week’s worth of Fall Fashion trends in my special Double Feature  collaboration series with Cassie from Style Cassentials.

We’re discussing fall trends this week – if you missed any of my previous posts I’ve list them at the end of this one…so you can get yourself caught up 🙂

Today we are Mad for Plaid!

Proofs-19

I just love the extra large collar of this black sweater.  The details like the single collar button and the cable knitting down the front of the sweater, being different than the arms and back of this piece, add a bit more flare to this office-all-business look.

Proofs-20If you’ve been following this Fall Double Feature series….you’ll notice how many of these trends are overlapping.  Like this one..combining Sweater Glamour and with Plaid.

This sangria deep red colour is popping up all over in Fall trends this season.  Which is lucky for me…as these adorable red booties have not gotten enough showtime in my office, nor has this glossy alligator purse. 🙂

How I Got The Look:

Long pencil skirt from LauraPetite; Black waffled collared sweater from Sears; Sangria red booties from NineWest; Sangria red alligator purse from Elmwood Spa  (yes…they occasionally have purses, accessories and footwear for sale near the exit)

Profs II-05

Cassie chose to showcase a black and white thin glen plaid pattern in both a blazer option and sheer shirt.  See how many of these Fall trends we’ve been talking about all week can easily  overlap each other and totally work!!!   Love how she’s incorporating Blooms on Black with the Mad for Plaid trend in her blazer look.  Head over to Style Cassentials for all the details on how Cassie has styled the trends.  Or visit her Facebook page here.

Fall Double Feature: Sweater Glamour

I hope you’ve been following my series in collaboration with Cassie from Style-Cassentials.   We’re discussing fall trends this week – if you missed any of my previous posts from this special Double Feature, you can check them out here.

Today we are talking about cozy, comfy, cuddly Sweater Glamour!

Proofs-15

Last year, I ended up buying a few sweater dresses  during end-of-season sales, so I never really got a chance to maximize wearing them.  They are PERFECT for the Fall …

Proofs-16

What I love best about them is the fact that they are warm enough to allow you to leave home without a proper jacket.  I picked up this red caplet from Jack Lux vintage and costume pop-up shop on West Queen West.  (A few of my Toronto Vintage Society sisters have been styling their window mannequins over the last few months, click here to read all about that).  Adding this bright pop of colour really helps break up the taupes and browns of this outfit.

Proofs-17 How I Got The Look:  Snake print sweater dress from Old Navy; red caplet from Jack Lux vintage; brown leather purse from a vintage pop-up sale in The Juncton (small bowler bag from Guess); brown suède booties and double drop pearl earrings Reitmans and mother of pearl ring from my travels in Jaipur, India.

Proofs-18I’m really digging  this oversized poncho-esk sweater Cassie is rocking.  And that fringed purse…**swoon**.  Head over to Style-Cassentials for all the details on how Cassie has styled the trend.  Or check her out on Facebook here.

AdditionElle @ The Stockyards

A few girlfriends and I have declared this month to be  “Save September”!  Unfortunately, the flurry of blogger events due to Fall Fashion premieres (click here) and end of season sales everywhere…I’m weakened easily.   Plus, with  this being my birthday month, my inbox has been bombarded with birthday coupons and discounts at all my favourite shops.  I’m only human friends.  It would be rude not to accept these kind offers and gifts…right?  right!

Needless to say….so far, I have failed miserably as this saving challenge amongst my girls thus far. 😦   But things are looking up for my Fall wardrobe!  Woot! Woot! 🙂

The other day I was greeted by the following pieces of mail….

IMG_4460

So I grabbed a fellow curvy lady in my life and off we went to checkout the GRAND OPENING EVENT of AdditionElle @ The Stockyards.

IMG_4471

I have to admit, from what I’ve seen myself at this opening and from fellow blogger, Curvy Canadian’s recent post on AdditionElle’s 2014 Holiday Fashion Preview — there weren’t very many pieces that were really calling out to me at all.

Out of the entire store – there were only three items that I bothered trying on (sorry about the burry iPhone pics friends):

IMG_4469
Love & Legend Faux Leather Bustier Dress — $130

Loved this faux leather bustier dress…I’m wearing a 2x that was wayyy too big for me.  The skirt beneath the tule is plaid…too cute.

IMG_4464
Love & Legend Sweatshirt Dress – $85

This sweatshirt dress is literally that….felt like I was in a nighty…an $85 nighty….that wasn’t very flattering on me….pfft!

IMG_4470
V-Neck Fit & Flare Dress – $95

Are you serious – this acid pink dress is all kinds of wonderful!!!!  I first tried on the 2x…and it was horrible.  Then the helpful, lovely shopgirl stripped down her mannequin to get me the ONLY size x they had in the store…and I was in love!  Needless to say, this frock came home with me …along with some wonderful tee-shirt bras (buy one, get the other at 40% off!….and the go up to H Cup friends!!!).

With my birthday coupons + 20% off grand opening discount + 2nd bra discount + a bonus $20 g/c handed to me upon walking into the shop for their store opening ….. I racked up the savings and went home a very happy camper! 🙂

FYI..this week only, September 5-12 any shopping you may do at this location (The Stockyards: Keele & St. Clair W.) you will receive 20% off your purchase!

Woot! Woot!

This gorgeous Joseph Ribkoff black n’ leather fit me more like a dress than it did a jacket … ah yes, the pleasures of being petite.

Overall, it was a fantastic night.  Or in the words of Miss Stefanie:

It was a girl-power-curvy-positive-collaborative-fashion-princess-empowering-sizesexy kind of night.

SEXYPLUSPREVIEWF14-157
Too funny…..us being drama queens … “It’s Too Hot!”

So … the big question – what did I go home with? 🙂

1.  A gorgeous statement necklace by Victorious Me, a Toronto-based retailer

IMG_4458

2.  A long slit dress, custom made for SexyPlus Clothing by Ralph C also made in Canada – $99…reduced to $25!!!!  Crazytown score – hooray for me!

3.  The newsprint dress: made in Canada by Artex, called the Jax dress, new Fall arrival priced at $89 — a steal and a half!!!

I even got my very own MEME out of the night … words to live by, I think 😉

Do You Know Your Measurements?

I’ve recently been shopping with a couple of slender, vintage loving ladies in my life – both of whom have mad sewing abilities, who come armed with tape measure whenever they are hunting for fabulous vintage finds.  Both of these lovelies are avid online clothing shoppers as well.  The key thing I noticed with both of them is that they knew exactly what their measurements were.  Plus, they had a keen eye for what materials and fabrics … knowing what could be taken in/let out easily for possible adjustments to make these new-to-them-pieces work perfectly for their bods (mad skills I tell you).

So let me ask you……Do you know your measurements?

measure-sales-results

The majority of women don’t.  I certainly didn’t.  Perhaps I was too scared to know what they are.  Aside from us all getting over the bad habit of comparing ourselves to other women, society has taught us that only thin can be beautiful.   With most ads showcasing perfectly airbrushed tall and skinny women to promote impossible standards of beauty, it’s no wonder we struggle with self-acceptance.  Sigh…  But we – people – come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

You can be the healthiest version of yourself and never come close to a size 4. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.  The#MeasureMeBeautiful campaign encourages women to know their bodies and their measurements, because KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

And your measurements are just that – facts, information. In order to be an informed shopper – you have to know your size.  Become educated and empowered.  Show the world that your measurements are just that: numbers, facts, statistics. And that they do not measure your worth, greatness, or beauty.

Knowing your measurements will help you look at size charts and know what size you should be trying on in that store, rather than taking what you think is your “usual size” into the dressing room, having it not fit, getting discouraged, depressed and then telling yourself that you must lose weight immediately.

That’s just ridiculous.  Fashion should empower women with confidence rather than riddle them with guilt and sadness in retailer’s change rooms.  Every woman has the ability to be a fashionista, regardless of their size (or income level, for that matter).

Sizes vary from store to store, and every brand uses a different “fit” model for their line. So let’s throw away sizes all together and simply know yourself!  When you know your measurements, you are in control – not the clothing or their designer.

Right? Right!

Here’s mine (and with this knowledge I’ve been in online shopping frenzy mode folks! It’s nuts!!!  Stay tuned for blogposts on my haul soon) 😉 ….

Screen Shot 2014-08-10 at 7.14.16 PM

The #MeasureMeBeautiful campaign also seeks to reinforce that YOUR SIZE DOES NOT DEFINE WHO YOU ARE as a person!  These measurements, my size, the number on the scale do not determine my worth as a person.  And I will not let them determine my happiness.

I am many things besides a Size 14, 16, or 18 (at any given store). I am also  striving to be a body positivity activist. I am a writer & blogger. I’m a fashionista. I’m a friend,  a sister, a daughter. A Learning Designer.  An off-key karaoke singer. A lindy-hopper. A homeowner.  A grieving mother to a recently departed fur baby (R.I.P. Berto).   Why should we continue letting the fashion industry tell us we all must fit into their ‘sample size’ in order to be beautiful or fashionable?

Mallorie Carrington of SmartGlamour came up with this fantastic campaign. She’s challenged me.  Now I’m challenging you PPMeow readers, to get involved!

Measure yourself!

Not sure how? SmartGlamour has tutorial videos up here.   And for those Petite divas out there who’s not quite sure if they fall under this “Petite” term…here’s a vid just for you:

Visit the #MeasureMeBeautiful website to see what the movement is all about. Take a photo of you measuring yourself and share it along with your measurements on InstagramFacebook and Twitter with the hashtag #MeasureMeBeautiful.  Let’s show the world that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

Help us spread the word that your size does not define you. Measure yourself beautiful! 🙂

Onesie for me

You must have notice all the hype around Jumpsuits and Rompers in plus sized fashion these days….especially for summer.  Wondering what your thoughts are on them?

A few months ago I did a roundup post on this, trying to figure out if this trend is for me.  Click here for my initial reactions to this plus-size fashion trend.

And then while perusing the sale racks of Reitmans this happened..20140803-172246-62566250.jpg

I wasn’t quite sure this trend was for me …. a onesie in any season seemed to be more trouble than it was worth.  Plus, the length and hip-to-shoulder ratios would typically be all off on my petite-plus sized bod.  Any any alterations that would be required would only increase the price point I was willing to pay for THIS fashion trend.

But this gem fit!  I found it in straight-sizes as an XXL …it wasn’t too long at all, the shoulders were only slightly larger than required AND it was only $19!  #winning  🙂

What I really like about this jumpsuit/onesie is the thoughtful details of the flattering v-neck and the added bonus POCKETS for your phone and lip gloss!

I could totally see myself taking this from DAY-TO-NIGHT with a chic blazer and pointy-toed pumps, to get this office/boardroom ready. Transition to evening cocktails or weekend fun with layers of gold jewelry and metallic sandals.

20140803-172240-62560619.jpg

This jumpsuit could easily be a great  option to keep your packing light on vacation. Pair it with simple flat sandals to stroll by day, and wedges for an evening look.

An additional bonus…is that there’s a slight elastic ankle, which allowed me to wear the pants shorter if I wanted to…like I did above.  With the interesting dark navy pattern of the jumpsuit, I chose to keep all the other accessories simple and gold to standout a bit more, along with my white ceramic MK watch.  And lastly, I added a skinny gold belt to the waist, as it is the only GOLD belt I own.

20140803-172315-62595000.jpg
Sorry for the headphone cord getting in the way of this belt pic…

Ideally, I would have liked to have worn this onesie with a more substantial gold belt…like the ones I’ve been coveting on my Polyvore collage board:

20140803-182859-66539463.jpg

How I Got the Look:

White cross body w/gold stud purse, gold drop earrings & gold coral necklace, Aldo Accessories; Gold & white sandals, Le Chateau; Navy patterned jumpsuit, Reitmans; Michael Kors watch; Gold skinny belt, Dressbarn (from an old dress)

20140803-172243-62563331.jpg

THIS JUST IN…..Reitmans (one of my favourite retailers) just recently put these pics of me onto their store’s Instagram!  Exciting!!!! 🙂

Belt It!

I was on the verge of uttering “I have nothing to wear” one morning last week, as I tried to plan my outfit for the day.

All I knew was that I wanted to wear these gold open-toed sling backs (Nine West) no matter what!

I bought them last summer for a wedding I was to attend, but last-minute decided another pair worked better with my outfit instead.  So these babies were yet to be worn!  AND today was the day! 🙂

Also, I was determined NOT to brush & do my hair…so whatever outfit I was gonna wear needed to go with one of these floral claw clips …

20140716-182146-66106697.jpg

I picked up this cotton polka dot open-backed tank from Old Navy ($10) from their colossal summer sale a few weeks ago.

The aqua/turquoise pencil skirt from Forever21+ ($6) …. both perfect separately, but something was missing when I put them together…

20140716-182211-66131014.jpg

And then I belted it!  And Tah-Dah!  It became awesome!!! 🙂

Sadly, try as I might there is no escaping the ‘bra-strap-peek-out’ situation.  Sigh…

20140716-182216-66136340.jpg

All I hear in my head is that Bubba Sparxx song……..“Booty booty booty rocking everywhere” as I write this post. 😉  LOL!!!

20140716-182214-66134145.jpg

Sparkly gold flats work well with this outfit too (and is what I switched to for my Lindy Hop lesson at LHR that evening)

20140716-182242-66162289.jpg

20140716-182243-66163655.jpg

How I Got The Look:

Aqua Pencil Skirt, Forever21+; Open-back Tank, Old Navy; Sparkly flats and Gold drop earrings, Payless; Open-toed sling-backs, Nine West; Wide Brown Belt, Lane Bryant; Hair Flower Claw-clips, Ardene; and a Suede vintage purse gifted20140716-182145-66105363.jpg

Article: Let’s Stop Disguising Body Image Prejudice as ‘Concern For Wellbeing’

I recently found and shared this article (from The Huffington Post) earlier this week, I shared it on my Petite Plus, Meow’s Facebook Page  – it got a ton of views!

So I thought I would share it as a post on this space as well.

Personally…I do my best to live a healthy lifestyle, in a flexible way.   My hatred for the Queen Streetcar has made me TTC token-frugal and WALK everywhere.  Between Yoga, Swing Dancing, Country Line-Dancing…..shoot, I’m up for any kind of dancing….. multiple times a week, I seem to maintain the size I am now.

I enjoy cooking and eating, appreciate and savour a gourmet meal out and when I need chocolate, I allow myself chocolate.   🙂

THIS is the body I was suppose to have, and I’m determined to actively celebrate it …. now …. and as I see fit!!!   It’s taken me a long time to get to this level of self-acceptance, it’s a work in progress, but I’m thrilled to finally be here.   After all, isn’t owning your body  the healthiest thing of all?

Let’s Stop Disguising Body Image Prejudice as ‘Concern For Wellbeing’.  Good read ahead folks.

20140715-215736-79056499.jpg

Let’s Stop Disguising Body Image Prejudice as ‘Concern For Wellbeing’ – Written by

I’m going to tell you something now which may shock you. Brace yourself. It is so utterly opposed to everything we have been conditioned to believe as a society that it might cause you a moment of absolute discombobulation… Ready?

There is absolutely no verified scientific evidence linking health to body shape.

That means every time you have heard some sanctimonious televisual pundit or journalist quoting stats on how much money ‘obesity’ costs the NHS every year, they were doing so on a flawed premise. It was *deep breath* incorrect.

I’ll allow you a few seconds to recover from what is undoubtedly some very disorientating cognitive dissonance…

Now, it would be utterly remiss of me to suggest that being completely sedentary and sitting on your backside all day eating huge quantities of lard is not terrible for your physical and mental health. It absolutely, irrefutably is. But we must remember that being sedentary and eating lard are not synonymous with being obese. There are plenty of obese people who eat well and take regular exercise, just as there are plenty of thin people who happen to have high metabolisms but are unknowingly storing potentially fatal fat around their internal organs by existing on super high calorie diets.

Making huge, sweeping generalisations about the particulars of a person’s lifestyle based on how they look is not only fist-gnawingly unfair, it’s preventing overweight people from getting the medical care they need and deserve (and it’s keeping theDaily Mail in business).

20140715-215737-79057006.jpg

There’s a secondary problem, too, of ‘overweight and obese’ people always being quoted in the same statistic. Here’s what always happens: TV show cuts to a VT of a person so large they are having difficulty walking down the street, wearing clothes three sizes two small (always filmed from behind, whether with their permission or not we do not know). TV presenter then says “One third of British adults are overweight or obese” before smoothly cutting to “obesity is linked to heart disease, diabetes blah blah blah”.

…SH*T! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE AND OUR LEGS WILL FALL OFF! (You are supposed to think).

Let us be clear. Being consistently slightly overweight is far healthier than yo-yo dieting, a pattern of behaviour which, sadly, a huge proportion of British people have been locked into based on a skewed notion of ‘health’ incessantly shoved in their faces by an industry with a multi-million pound advertising budget at its disposal.

safe_image.php

I have a BMI of 27, putting me firmly in the ‘overweight’ category. Putting aside for one second how flawed BMI is as a measurement of, well, anything (condemning as it does most professional athletes, mixed race and black people to the Siberia of the dreaded overweight section, forevermore to be told they’re going to die and their legs will fall off) a recent comprehensive health check at a Harley Street clinic revealed I am 30% LESS likely to develop heart problems in the future than my peers. This is because I exercise three or four times a week and always ensure I get my five a day (fruit and veg, too! SNARF!). I have low cholesterol and low blood pressure – officially. And I’m a size 16. I’m the sort of seeming-anomaly that should make Katie Hopkins’ head implode (and nearly have, on numerous occasions, which was of course tremendous fun).

Despite this, my NHS GP is always telling me any ailment that happens to befall me (from anaemia to eczema) is ‘more common in overweight people’ and then she ticks her little box on her little flipchart which no doubt says ‘this condition was ENTIRELY self-inflicted by this STUPID fat person on her STUPID fat self’. Presumably, thin people are never poorly. Ever.

The prevailing confusion surrounding health and body shape is what allows people who are body Nazis, people who believe the slender are intellectually, emotionally and genetically superior, people who are *whisper it* quite obviously battling their own demons because no one should really care about anyone else’s body that much, to cover their inherent prejudice under a false notion of ‘caring about your wellbeing’.

As a body image campaigner, I’ve only ever wanted people to be healthy and happy. Crucially, I understand that health is a precarious balance between the mental and physical variety and that anyone sticking to a completely rigid regime of food and exercise is neglecting the former. I also understand that bodies are diverse organisms and that humans can live a healthy lifestyle and exist within the confines of huge variety of shapes and sizes.

I understand that body image insecurity stops people partaking in physical activity, from concentrating in school, from going for the job they really want or dating the person their heart desires. It stops us functioning, as a nation. Fat shaming rhetoric does not help our collective mind-set and, despite what we are so often told, it will not improve our health.

So, here’s my advice: Live a healthy lifestyle, in a flexible way. Laugh and love (because both giggling and shagging are fantastic for the abdominal muscles), exercise sometimes, eat a rainbow. Then see how your body ends up. Whatever it looks like, that is the body you are supposed to have and it is your right to celebrate it how you see fit.

Owning your body is the healthiest thing of all.

Backless Nautical Navy

Ooo!!  It’s summertime and I have to admit, I’ve been baring my arms and legs much more than I ever had in pervious summers.

Blogging has gotten me braver in my outfit choices and more confident to rock things I’d normally shy away from.  Like this fantastic dress I picked up cross-border shopping recently … I was immediately drawn to it on the rack.  Buuuuut upon picking it up I noticed that an important piece of fabric was missing ….that critical piece of fabric that covers up my giant bra clasps and that loveable back roll that gets formed upon wearing said giant bra.

20140626-153337-56017741.jpg

Doesn’t this dress just SCREAM: Summer!!!  I just love it!

The hi-lo skirt is perfect for petite beauties as there will be zero ‘tripping-up-the-stairs’ incidents as there might be with lengthy maxis (least it’s the case for moi…seems I’m terribly clumsy).  I’ve already professed my love and devotion to all the nautical-ness in fashion since the Spring…so this dress just needed to be mine!   Click here and here and here and here for all my previous nautical love posts friends!

20140626-153340-56020412.jpg

A special shoutout to the lovely coral floral necklace and earring set I’m wearing in this post.  Picked it up from this cute lil’ boutique called One Girl Who on St. Clair West in Toronto.  Recently rediscovered it among all my jewellery….. doesn’t it just add to the summertime fun feeling of this outfit?  🙂
