Winter Trends: Velvet

Here we are: the last Thursday of December …. the LAST THURSDAY OF 2016!!!

All month long PPMeow! teamed-up with StyleCassentials to bring you another collaboration featuring some of the Winter Trends for 2016 Holiday Season!!!

To wrap up our December long series we’re putting our own spin on wearing VELVET!

As luxurious as velvet it… I’ve stayed away from it so far, as I just haven’t found a piece that I liked myself in. :/

The velvet slip dress was the “IT” item this Fall.  So I kept an eye out for one that might work for me and my bod.  I ordered one from ASOS way back at the beginning of this month – but it has never bothered to arrive. :/

And then I found this one on the Forever21+ Instagram page:
fullsizerender-17

Remember Carrie Bradshaw’s “the naked dress” from SATC?   That’s basically how I felt when I first tried this dress on upon its arrival in my mail. 😮

This dress has a fantastic hemline, with a bit of ruching in the mid-section to help mask any tummy troubles from that 2nd helping of dinner or in my case a cheese fondu party.

dsc03685

I didn’t feel comfortable having the ta-tas all out-and-about in this brown/pink curve-hugging velvety frock for holiday house parties among married and coupled-off friends.

Sooooooo I wore a thin long-sleeved band tee underneath it + sheer hosiery + mid-calf length black boots … and BAM!

Holiday Ready rocking this Winter Trend! ❤

I’ve styled this velvet dress in 3 different ways throughout December …. which way do you like it best?

How I Got The Look:  Velvet slip dress, Forever21+; Bomber stripped jacket, Old Navy; Boney M tee, super old from my radio days; Black mid-calf boots, Steps

Cassie is wearing this high neck, long-sleeved grey velvet frock….with a little cutout.  Her gold accessories, purse and strappy shoes really add to her overall glamorous look!

Winter Trends: Sparkle

Christmas is THIS WEEKEND….woohooo!!!! ❤  Hope you’ve been following our December long series!!!

What series? Well…

PPMeow! has teamed-up with StyleCassentials to bring you another collaboration featuring some of the Winter Trends for 2016 Holiday Season!!!

Today’s we’re gonna show you how to make SPARKLE apart of your Winter wardrobe for holiday happens friends! 😉

I found this tri-coloured layered sequins pencil skirt on the Forever21+ website way back in November and ordered it right away.

Originally I was going to pair this skirt with a satin, off-one-shoulder top, creating an extra dramatic look. As great as a dramatic looks can be, I really didn’t have anywhere go this year that required an over-the-top look like that. :/

I really wanted to make use of this sparkle winter trend more than just a “special occasion” piece.

So I decided to pair it with a variety of warm winter sweaters to create more wearable looks.

fullsizerender-15

I went with a light-weight, black turtle neck…with little button details on the sleeves and black booties.

Couldn’t you totally see yourself wearing this to a house-party…possibly even wear it all day at the office with afterwork cocktails on the agenda. 😉

If you wanted to amp up the sexy – ditch the turtleneck look – and go with a sweater that has a lower neckline and pop of colour!   I especially love this purple sweater with bow-tie-neck, which basically makes me look like a sparkly present. ❤

How I Got The Look: Sequins pencil skirt & purple bow-tie sweater, Forever21+; Black turtleneck, Mark’s Work Warehouse; Black booties, Payless

Cassie went with this adorable shiny striped number with gingerbread doll purse and black booties!  I love pink & purple hues in holiday wear! ❤

Head over to Style Cassentials for all the details on Cassie’s winter trend of sparkle in her outfit.  Or her Instagram here. Or visit her Facebook page here.

Stay tuned as we got ONE MORE THURSDAY LEFT in December!!!   See how we’ve put our own unique twists on popular Winter Trends this year.

We hope they are bring you some fashion inspiration to try yourself this month!

Last Week, Today

I’m really enjoying writing these “looks-in-review” weekly blogposts for you friends 🙂

Hope you’re enjoying reading them…

Here’s what I got up to last week:

Back in the Habit Again

Sooooo this happened.  Sister Irene appeared last weekend for the annual Swing Out To Victory dinner/dance event in Hamilton.

Click here to see 2014 and 2015‘s event.

Here I am in all of my holy glory.  Don’t worry – it was sacramental wine I was drinking 😉

Don’t look too closely, as I sewed this costume myself… still can’t believe it!

I was apart of a fantastic costume theme – where 11 of us dressed as the cast of The Sound of Music.  Complete with the Baroness, The Captain, Maria, all 7 Von Trapp children and of course the Rev. Mother …moi! 🙂

This wasn’t the first time I showed off my ‘nun-sense side’.  Check out the below from my days of Halloween costuming in elementary school.

Happy to report we WON 1 place for the Best Dressed contest this year!!!  Huge deal, considering this was my first attempt at sewing anything.

Special thanks to my mom for her sewing machine + help & guidance with laughs. 🙂

Stylish & Warm

Last week the temps dipped into the negatives which forced me to get all bundled up in winter outer wear.

I found this lovely shop on WQW called Pockets & Pearls with this gorgeous wool hat.  The broad brim and tricolour of merlot-camel-navy …

The navy jacket is from Eloquii’s new petite line.  The first time a coat has fit me properly in the shoulders and in the length of the arms.  If you haven’t checked them out before – you should!!!!

img_2753
How I Got The Look:  Navy Coat with Gold Buttons, Eloquii Petites; Hat, Pockets & Pearls; Shoes, NineWest; Gloves w/fur trim, Danier Leather; Pants, Old Navy; Scarf and purse are vintage finds

Toddler-Granny

I’ve always have a hard time explaining what my “personal style” truly is.  Until I read this article:  ‘Toddler Grandma Style,’ The Fashion Approach That Will Set You Free

I’m always a sucker for a cute print on a dress.  Found this foxy frock at Forever 21+…

Simply paired it with a vintage gold-button cashmere cardi and booties.  And voila!

A Casual Friday Office Appropriate outfit was born 🙂

There you have it –  what  I wore, last week.

Hope I’ve created a few inspirations for you to try this week.  xo

Turban Chic

image1-2

OK!!  Can we all take a moment and fawn over this amazing turban I found!!!

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

image2

Turbans are a popular item in the fashion world. Traditionally they’ve been worn by men of North African and Southeast Asia.

But nowadays these headwraps are becoming a fashion staple –   spotted on runways and street styles.

FullSizeRender

I try an avoid wearing black in the summer.

But since my hot pink leopard turban was the main focus of this outfit, a simple black cotton, knee-lenght tank dress seemed to be all I needed.

Belting it just added more shape and was a great way to pulling out  the browns of the leopard print.

Making this look an easy way to showcase my new found LOUD summer accessory.

image3
NATURALLY I had to wear lipstick to match my turban 😛

Who am I kidding! This turban look is gonna become my signature look into the FALL too!

I’m on the hunt for these turbans in ever eff’ing colour I can…so I never have do to my hair every again!!!! 😀

How I Got The Look:

Dress, H&M; Sandals, Coach; Belt is super old; Turban, Clore Beauty

FullSizeRender-1It’s been a while since I’ve taken any snaps on my balcony in front of this classic Petite Plus, Meow signature brick wall.  Did you miss it? :p

What do you think about the turban style? How would you rock one? What are your thoughts on how I styled it?  Tell me in the comments below!

Spring Double Feature: Fetching Florals

Our special Spring Trends Double Feature continues with fellow petite plus blogger, Cassie from Style Cassentials.

Today we’re talking about Fetching Florals.

“Florals for Spring.  How original.” – Miranda Presley, The Devil Wears Prada

This is not a new trend, I know.  But the truth is be I *don’t* actually have many floral pieces in my wardrobe.

I have really been struggling to find a spring outfit to fit this theme … that I actually wanna wear.

And then I found this!!!!

unspecified

I’ve been longing to find the perfect pastel to grace my spring wear.

When I found this wide leg culotte pant jumpsuit in this great pantone custard + floral pattern … I was nervous when I added it to my cart without trying it on.

Plus size onesies aren’t always magical :/ (Click here  and here and here for more on my thoughts on jumpsuits).

Petite Plus, Meow

But the colour, a soft lime custard. ❤  The floral print in lovely pastel colours. ❤

Just look at that sweet little keyhole with button closure in back! ❤  The slant pockets! ❤

And the fabric…. oh-so soft and lightweight rayon, super easy to wear into the Summer months too. ❤ ❤ ❤

unspecified-6

The elasticized waist with drawstring tie, helps give me a nice cinched-in look.

I wasn’t sure about the loose, wide cropped leg look on my frame …but I’m so glad that I didn’t let that keep me away. 🙂

Since I’m petite (short), it hits me a bit past mid-calf mark…so maybe I’ll get this hemmed a bit

unspecified-5

Where did I find this V-Neck Jumpsuit that fits all of my ample top and bottom halves? 😮

Old eff’ing Navy!!

They are just killing it this season with their pieces!

And when I checked out online, I got 41% off + FREE shipping! #winning    Affordable, trendy, good-looking Spring fashion.

You Can’t Go Wrong!!

How I Got The Look: Floral jumpsuit, Old Navy; Jelly shoes from my Malaysia trip last year; Sandals + flower clips from Aldo; Aviator sunnies from some shop on WQW

Cassie is wearing this large floral print two-piece.  Love how the turquoise and pink pops against the black.

A New Year: Best of PPMeow

Screen Shot 2016-01-10 at 12.56.02 PM

Happy New Year friends!

Hope you rung in 2016 with love in your heart and a smile on your face. 🙂

I’ve been a social butterfly all December long, and for NYE I spent it cozy with my bae Netflix – for a quite me, myself and Irene evening.

❤ ❤ ❤  It. Was. Glorious. ❤ ❤ ❤

As for resolutions … this basically sums it up for me:

1930797_10153818096882905_3037596641247621160_nI started this fashion & lifestyle blog as a fun outlet to share the things I liked.  Over the past two years, the blog’s focus has moved more and more into an “online journal of the life and times of moi” – showcasing What I DID and What I Wore!

Having just celebrated the blog’s 2nd anniversary (yay!) … there are a number of things I want to start introducing into blog content in 2016, I will definitely continue with many more of WID and WIW type-posts in the upcoming year. 😉

There have been some fun, new, winterized outfits in the first 10-days of January, and if you’re following my Instagram channel you’ve caught a glimpse of them.

But for now, let’s take a look back to my favourite looks on the blog from the LAST YEAR!

  1. Poodle Skirt Perfection – You know how much I love the retro 1950’s look?  I had the perfect opportunity to finally wear it … to the opening of Bean and Baker Malt Shop this summer.

2. Sea-side Sun Dress – This was a cheap buy from Old Navy and worn many times from spring through summer.  Special thanks to Rebecca Northcott Photography for the photoshoot.

3. Picnic Parasol – This green checked dress was custom-made for moi in Vietnam when I visited in March.  It was the perfect outfit for the annual Toronto Vintage Society Picnic.

4. Florals & Stripes – Mixing patterns more bravely was something I did a lot of this past year.  THIS was one of my favourite combos from Spring.

top 8 of 20155. Hibiscus Wrap Pants – Travelling was a major focus for me last year…and these fab wrap pants were a fashion find in my exploration of Asia – KL, Malaysia to be exact.

6. Peek-a-boo Pencil Pin-up – Found this curve hugging pin-up frock for $15 at one of Tatyana’s super-duper sale events.  It was perfect for the White Kitschmas themed TVS Holiday Celebration.

7. FATkini – In the 30-something year’s of my life, 2015 was the year I embraced my bod, buddha belly, thick thighs and all, and wore a bikini bathing suit!!!  It was the “most liked” photo on my Instagram and even the lovely GabiFresh commented on it!!!

8. Hello, Yellow – Ah, yes…this yellow skirt ❤  Another custom creation from my travels to Asia – Hoi An, Vietnam.  It’s been styled many different ways all last year…and even helped me create a Snow White Lindy Hop Halloween look.  Love. This. Skirt.

There you have it!  My Favourite Looks from the past year.  Which is your favourite?  Tell me in the comments section. 🙂

And stay tuned for new blog content all year long!

Asian Adventure: Hội An, Vietnam – The Ancient City

Although much of the trip was spent dancing with  VLX …. I was able to check out a few sites, ate some amazing meals and even got to visit a tailor to get some custom threads made!!!

A few noteworthy things to mention if you are planning on visiting Vietnam:

  • There is a VISA requirement for this country.  From my earlier post, What to Know Before you Go, many Asian countries issue visas free of charge on arrival at major airports and land-boarders. Vietnam is NOT one of these countries.   There are a few online service providers that will help get you started with the Vietnam Visa process, we used:  http://www.myvietnamvisa.com/   The application process is simple enough – just go online and apply. But the cost has gone up unfortunately — the online processing fee is $20 (just remember to select Canadian dollars).
  • Make sure the name you put in is exactly as your passport, that your passport number is correct, and that you put your arrival date correctly. If any of these are incorrect, you might have to pay a heavy fine upon arrival.  This takes about 2-3 days to process and they will email you a letter – which you will need to print and bring along with $45 USD in cash exactly, to be paid with CRISP bills – no joke.  If your bills are wrinkled or ripped, even slightly, your money will be rejected at the counter and Visa denied.

    IMG_6885
The Japanese Bridge – Hoi An
  • In addition to this letter, you will be required to fill out a form at the counter that you will have to frantically fill out before they will take your money.  Some online service providers send out this form with the letter.  Our service didn’t. FYI.
  • Oh, you also need passport photos – which you might want to get while you’re overseas travelling – as North American passport photos are usually highly overpriced.
  • The currency used is the Vietnamese DONG – maybe the best currency ever, by name alone 😉  Everyone is a Millionaire there, as $100CAD translates to $1.7Million Dong!  It took me the entire 4-days to get used to the giant bills to pay for anything correctly there.

If you’re not already following me on Instagram … Here are a few snaps from my adventures in Hoi An …

THE FOOD!!!

I’m a huge fan of asian cuisine … but the amounts of delicious foods that were eaten my short time in Hoi An was magical – and sooooo cheap!!!!!

VIETNAMESE ICED COFFEE (CAFE SUA DA)  – This is oh-so delicious.  Made with Vietnamese coffee press + Sweetened condensed milk filling a tall glass filled with ice to its brim!

AND then these BLOSSOMS –  Hoi An fried wontons are covered in a salsa-like topping of vegetables and sweet and sour shrimp or pork …. they are crispy, mouth-watering works of art.

IMG_6903
VIETNAMESE ICED COFFEE (CAFE SUA DA) HOI AN FRIED WONTON BLOSSOMS

OK! The below dish is called Cao lầu – it is a regional Vietnamese dish made with noodles, pork, and local greens, and is only found in the town of Hội An.

Naturally, I ate as much of this as I could while I was there.

IMG_6905
Cao lầu and Larue Beer – genuine Hoi An street-must-eats!

WHAT I BOUGHT

In terms of souvenirs I behaved myself.  My purchases included: two medium-sized fabric lanterns (for my balcony), coconut bowls, Viet snacks for coworkers AND the most delicious coffee ever + metal coffee distiller!

IMG_6999

My biggest excitement …and spending … took place with the custom-made clothes!!! 😀

Everyone who had visited Vietnam before, had told me how great the tailors were out there.   I was loosing my mind trying to narrow down my choices of what items I wanted to get made.

IMG_6951
The tailor I used — visited them a few times to get the following pieces perfect for moi!

Before leaving for my trip, I picked pieces that I’d been coveting that didn’t come in plus sizes at the vintage/reproduction boutiques I frequent.  And found my TOP FOUR items I wanted to get made:

IMG_7185
1. Hello, Yellow two-piece midi-crop top set

IMG_6997
2.  Green Gingham

IMG_7184
3. The bow-tie dress shirt & 4. overall skirt with pockets

Buuuuut there were TONS of cool ideas and dress designs hanging all around me at this little shop.  And I’ve got a problem and weakness for pretty frocks.

In the end …. SEVEN new pieces actually came home with me!  And when all was said and done, each item cost me approx. $42 CAD.

IMG_7301
Saving this floral frock for Toronto Vintage Society’s Annual Tiki Party this August 29, 2015 – save the date friends 😉

IMG_7295
Bird Dress

Which is pretty awesome, considering I selected premium fabrics + lining, got to add my own ‘design’ ideas such as adding POCKETS to everything …. and each piece is unique to fit me perfectly.

Nobody in Toronto is gonna be wearing my outfit. Huge Bonus 🙂

Stay tuned for upcoming blogpost highlighting each of these outfits specifically!!! Thanks for reading! xo

Keepin’ it Cozy!

I shop A LOT, I know.  But before I make a purchase,  I always try to make sure I can wear something multiple ways.

If you can’t think of at least two places to wear it, don’t buy it …. is a good rule to follow, I find.

Do you remember this fabulous acid pink dress I bought when AdditionElle opened their new Stockyards location?

Profs II-53Now, that we’re in the depths of January – a pop of hot pink colour is a sure-fire way to lift my mood and spring in my step.

IMG_6357

Wore this dress to the office the other day.  I simply threw on a warm, extra furry, black and white cowl-neck sweater (a gift I got for Xmas) over top of the dress … belted it … and voila!  Winterized and office ready!  Boom!

IMG_6362Belts can make everything better.  Either a skinny belt over a top, sweater or a sash on a wool coat; having something there to define where your waist is makes you look shapelier.  I really am pleased with how it transformed this furry sweater overtop of this dress.IMG_6369

I often pick out my outfits the night before – especially for those days I’m headed into the office.   I cannot tell you how many times I used to not bother, then be in a rush in the morning and just put on the first thing I could find in a hurry.  With a bit of pre-planning you’ll pick something practical, stylish and feel great, rather than rushing and feeling like a hot mess all day!

Plus it gives you time to pick out your accessories — which I had a habit of running out without when I would pick it out in the morning!  I feel naked without earrings and hate looking for the time only to stare at my bare wrist.  **grumble grumble**

A little planning the night before is totally worth the effort friends. 😉

Little Black Dress #1

I dunno about you friends, but January is officially Little Black Dress month for me.  There has been WAYYY too much eating over the festive season … and this holiday weight is making me choose blacks over other fun colours in my wardrobe these days.

Lucky for me, I’ve got a lil’ Collection of LBDs that don’t nearly get enough of my attention all year round.  So why not use this month to let them shine 🙂

LBD #1:  Forever21+

IMG_5905Truth be told, I bought this dress as a Halloween Costume one year, when a girlfriend and I dressed as Robert Palmer girls.  The best (and easiest) costume to pull off I tell ya.

What sold me about this dress was the different textures of fabric used.  The top is this shiny poly-blend with a sweet little twist to the neckline which leads to off the shoulder sleeves, and the skirt portion is a ribbed cotton.

IMG_5902There is beauty in simplicity.  I tried sticking to a head-to-to black … keeping the hose and heels black too.  But in the end, I needed more — and that’s when this red blazer just kicked it up a notch.IMG_5913This giant pearl necklace is my absolute favourite (Your Big Sister’s Closet) – it just adds the perfect punch of sophistication to this entire outfit.

IMG_5906Do you have a favourite Little Black Dress?  Where’s it from and how to you style it? Tell me your tips and tricks by leaving a comment below.

How I Got The Look:  LBD from Forever21+; Red blazer from Jessica, Sears; Glossy black pumps from Payless; Sheer hosiery from Dollarama; Necklace from Your Big Sister’s Closet; Gold earrings from Ardene
