Size Sexy

How many times have you tried on a piece of clothing a size up from your ‘usual’ … and didn’t want to buy it simply because you didn’t like that the tag wasn’t what you wanted it to say?

On the flip side, have you ever cheered for joy in a change room upon finding your body being able to fit into an article of clothing that’s smaller than your ‘usual’ size?

I know I’m personally guilty of both of these reactions.

Society has us so obsessed with our SIZE.  Why are we allowing a number on the back of a tag affect us so much?  After all, YOU are so much more than just a number.

Sexy is a state of mind. Confidence is sexy.  Body confidence does not come from trying to achieve the ‘perfect body, it comes from embracing the one you already got.  It has taken me a long time to learn this lesson.   I struggle with it from time to time – me and my body confidence are  works-in-progress.  And I have to say that blogging has been the major contributing factor to lifting my sexy, confident spirit. 🙂
10712765_261897830685969_7370770697336109030_n

Two years ago, I got an opportunity to reassess and really focus on me again.   I began investing in higher quality fashionable pieces of clothing, shoes and accessories – decorating my outside in an effort to uplift my inside.  The more ‘grey’ I felt, the more dressed up I would get, sticking to that old adage of ‘fake it ‘til I make it’ – if I LOOKED happy and put-together then I’d eventually FEEL that way too.  And it totally worked!

Over the last few months of blogging, taking photos of myself all dolled up, researching new designers, writing about trends and ‘how-to’s’, reading and sharing body positive messages and surrounding myself with positive people who actively strive to challenge the status quo — to re-imagine diverse bodies challenging dominant beauty and body ideas…..has shifted and lifted my self image.  And for the first time in my life I can confidently say:   I’m hella sexy! 🙂

I had the delight of meeting the lovely Miss Tierra Sedgemore, creator of Size Sexy earlier this month.  And am thrilled to be one of the Bloggers she connected with to help spread this message of self-love, acceptance and body confidence.

I’m Batman!

How cute is this tee??

IMG_4485

For a quick and easy Sunday Brunch outfit of the day, I paired this fantastic baby BATMAN tee (Ardene) with a simple cotton black pencil skirt (Old Navy) and these plaid loafers (Payless).  No jewellery, just my white ceramic Michael Kors watch.

IMG_4510

I’ll be honest with you… I was uber nervous about buying this shirt from Ardene.  The largest they go is XL and often the quality of garments are for one-time wear.  But somehow all of me fit into this this one….without streching poor Batman’s face all across my chest – #winning – so naturally this tee had to come home with me.

After all, {insert deep, throaty voice here} …..  I’M BATMAN! 🙂

ps: sorry for the unkept hair and lack of makeup – it was Sunday people.  Geez!

Body Confidence Canada Awards 2014

IMG_4530

September 9th is known as the International Day of Beauty  — it was created by the International Committee of Aesthetics and Cosmetology (CIDESCO) and was adopted by the World Congress in 1995. What better day to celebrate body confidence, education, health and community empowerment!

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the 2nd annual Body Confidence Canada Awards – A Toast To Curves  held at Panorama.  The BCCAs created and run by the amazing Aisha Fairclough and Jill Andrew, of Fat In The City, to celebrate “champions of body confidence, positivity and body diversity in Canada”.Body-Confidence-Canada-AwardsBody Confidence Canada acknowledges Canadian based recipients who actively fight against stereotypes that attempt to label marginalized bodies (i.e., fat, radicalized, dis/abled, etc.) as unhealthy, uninspired, and underachieving.  Looking around the room that night, there was something incredibly refreshing and empowering being among so many beautiful, confident women of all shapes and sizes. 🙂

BCCA 2014
The Hosts: Aisha Fairclough and Jill Andrew, of Fat In The City

The evening began with cocktails and  incredible views of the city …followed by inspiring speeches from guest speakers and the winning nominees.

BIG Tune!

I Absolutely Love Meghan Trainor’s voice!  Her 4-track album is terrific.  But, my heart belongs to this catching tune “All About That Bass“.

If you’re looking to add this BIG Tune to your karaoke repertoire, like I am 😉 ….here are the lyrics:

Because you know
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass

Yeah, it’s pretty clear, I ain’t no size two
But I can shake it, shake it
Like I’m supposed to do
‘Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase
And all the right junk in all the right places

I see the magazine workin’ that Photoshop
We know that shit ain’t real
C’mon now, make it stop
If you got beauty building, just raise ’em up
‘Cause every inch of you is perfect
From the bottom to the top

Yeah, my mama she told me don’t worry about your size
She says, “Boys like a little more booty to hold tonight.”
You know I won’t be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that’s what you’re into then go ahead and move along

Because you know I’m
All about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass
Hey!

I’m bringing booty back
Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that
No I’m just playing. I know you think you’re fat
But I’m here to tell ya
Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top

Yeah my mama she told me don’t worry about your size
She says, “Boys like a little more booty to hold tonight.”
You know I won’t be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that’s what you’re into then go ahead and move along

Because you know I’m
All about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass

Because you know I’m
All about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass

Because you know I’m
All about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass, no treble
I’m all about that bass
‘Bout that bass
‘Bout that bass, ’bout that bass
Hey, hey, ooh
You know you like this bass

Swing Prom!

If you’ve been following PPMeow! for sometime now, you’ll know that I’ve fallen head-over-heels for Lindy Hop and Swing Dancing!  So much so that all summer I’ve tried to attend as many free, outdoor swing event around the city (click here & here), and nearly every Saturday (since the completion of my lessons with Lindy Hop Revolution),  I’ve been at The Dovercourt House where Toronto Lindy Hop hosts weekly live bands and dances (with lessons).

Well friends, the last Saturday of every month, Toronto Lindy Hop has a fantastic theme night – and August’s was: SWING PROM!

Which means, this chick had an excuse to get extra all dolled up in vintage-esk duds AND dance the night away in a tiara – duh!

IMG_4340 IMG_4394

IMG_4396

I picked up this teal dress from a Plus Size Consignment Sale I participated in last year — its an ASOS dress — and this is the first time I’ve ever worn it.  The long strand pearls were picked up from the Toronto Vintage Clothing Show a earlier this year and shoes (from Naturalizer) and tiara were from my wedding.  Thrilled to finally have an excuse to wear this prettiness out again!

IMG_4404

IMG_4415

To my surprise….making these corsages and  boutonnieres were uber simple.

All you need are some love faux flowers and leaves, a bit of felt adhere the flowers down to, elastic to secure it to your wrists and a hot glue gun to stick everything down into place.  Easy. Peasy. Lemon. Squeezy. 🙂

IMG_4426
These were the ones I created!!! I’m not at all crafty…and was thrilled and how great these turned out! Yay me!
IMG_4416
Tah-Dah! Corsages totally make these prom dresses….don’t you think?
IMG_4420
Swing dancing in poofy frocks just makes your heart happy…. at least it does mine. 🙂

AdditionElle @ The Stockyards

A few girlfriends and I have declared this month to be  “Save September”!  Unfortunately, the flurry of blogger events due to Fall Fashion premieres (click here) and end of season sales everywhere…I’m weakened easily.   Plus, with  this being my birthday month, my inbox has been bombarded with birthday coupons and discounts at all my favourite shops.  I’m only human friends.  It would be rude not to accept these kind offers and gifts…right?  right!

Needless to say….so far, I have failed miserably as this saving challenge amongst my girls thus far. 😦   But things are looking up for my Fall wardrobe!  Woot! Woot! 🙂

The other day I was greeted by the following pieces of mail….

IMG_4460

So I grabbed a fellow curvy lady in my life and off we went to checkout the GRAND OPENING EVENT of AdditionElle @ The Stockyards.

IMG_4471

I have to admit, from what I’ve seen myself at this opening and from fellow blogger, Curvy Canadian’s recent post on AdditionElle’s 2014 Holiday Fashion Preview — there weren’t very many pieces that were really calling out to me at all.

Out of the entire store – there were only three items that I bothered trying on (sorry about the burry iPhone pics friends):

IMG_4469
Love & Legend Faux Leather Bustier Dress — $130

Loved this faux leather bustier dress…I’m wearing a 2x that was wayyy too big for me.  The skirt beneath the tule is plaid…too cute.

IMG_4464
Love & Legend Sweatshirt Dress – $85

This sweatshirt dress is literally that….felt like I was in a nighty…an $85 nighty….that wasn’t very flattering on me….pfft!

IMG_4470
V-Neck Fit & Flare Dress – $95

Are you serious – this acid pink dress is all kinds of wonderful!!!!  I first tried on the 2x…and it was horrible.  Then the helpful, lovely shopgirl stripped down her mannequin to get me the ONLY size x they had in the store…and I was in love!  Needless to say, this frock came home with me …along with some wonderful tee-shirt bras (buy one, get the other at 40% off!….and the go up to H Cup friends!!!).

With my birthday coupons + 20% off grand opening discount + 2nd bra discount + a bonus $20 g/c handed to me upon walking into the shop for their store opening ….. I racked up the savings and went home a very happy camper! 🙂

FYI..this week only, September 5-12 any shopping you may do at this location (The Stockyards: Keele & St. Clair W.) you will receive 20% off your purchase!

Woot! Woot!

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

Last month I was nominated for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.  Thank you so much Jacquie, founder & curator of the Toronto Vintage Society,  for the kudos and recognition friend.  I’m oh-so thrilled to know that the wee space I’ve carved out for myself in the blogosphere is actually being read, let alone being deemed as ‘inspiring’ and award-winning.   I am truly humbled.  Thank you 🙂

very-inspiring-blog-award_zps19a927bfUpon receiving this blog award, I must now share seven random facts about myself – dems da rules.  So here I go…

FACT #1:  Repeat.  Play.

Sometimes I’ll discover/rediscover a song, and I will replay it – on repeat – for countless hours on end.  Annoying, maybe. But I can’t help it.  There are a few songs that are hauntingly beautiful.  So beautiful, that listening to it once is just not enough.  They NEED to be played and listened to over and over for hours…to truly be heard.  Tracks that have this quality who have been on my constant repeat loop recently are:

FACT #2: I cannotgirl-swim swim

Yup.  I never learnt how and am somewhat afraid of the water.  When I was little my Pops took me to the public pool and gave me one simple instruction:  sit on the towel and wait for him to return from a lap.  Naturally seeing him dive in so easily, I guess I figured I could too …
He returned to find me being revived by a young lifeguard.  Needless to say we returned home where my mom gave him all kinds of sh!t.  To this day whenever I feel water in my ears, I freak out just a bit.  Now, this hasn’t stopped me from enjoying pools and oceans whist on vacay.  I’m an excellent wader and have mad noodle-floating-skills.  I’ve signed up for “learn to swim” workshops a few times at local community centres …however, the adult sessions have always gotten cancelled due to lack of interest & signups…and there is no way I’m going to join the 14-year-olds in the youth sessions.  Nope.  Not.  Gonna.  Happen.

FACT #3:  Facebook Game Addict

You know those annoying Facebook alerts you get cuz someone is asking for lives for some silly online game to unlock that next level …. well, friends…..that’s me.  I’m that girl.  I’m the one playing those kinda games.   Candy Crush.   Farm Hero.  Scrabble.  Words With Friends.  And my newest obsession: Cookie Crunch. This addiction has gotten so bad that for a little while I would wake up in the middle of the night to see if my ‘lives’ have been restored, so I could play some more.  Gotta get to that next level.  I just gotta.  Sick right?  I know.  Shameful, guilty pleasures of my life.

unnamed unnamed-2 scrabble-game-help.w654 candy-crush-saga

FACT #4:  I love punny jokes!  (Ha!  See what I did there…yup! I’m hilarious!)

Shameful, but true.  Those “dad jokes” that most groan at…. I love-love-love oh-so-very much!  Dunno what it is….but puns are great!  Not sure when I became so nerdy with my love of corny jokes.  I blame my day job.  As a corporate trainer, I’ve got to build and keep rapport quickly and throughout the day, usually with a bunch of strangers I’ll only ever engage with during said training session.  Sometimes I’m soooooo engaging as a facilitator that participants choose NOT to leave the room at designated breaks and lunchtime, leaving me to make chitchat conversation for a full 30-mins+.  Talk about pressure!  But with an arsenal of clean, cheesy, PUNNY jokes up my sleeve…I manage to fill the void of silence and get a chuckle or two out of nearly everyone.  Pitty laughs totally count! After all, it’s all in the delivery – and yes, I’m well aware of the fact that there’s more to being funny than just funny looking.  BA-DUM-BUMP!  I’m here all week folks! Try the veal! Tip your servers! 🙂
IMG_4457

FACT #5:  Toastmasters

Believe it or not, I was shy.  Shocking, I know 🙂  Standing in front of people to give a presentation made me sick to my stomach in grade school.  Public speaking was still very difficult for me in high school, and in college my courage to present in front of groups of people only increased slightly.  I remember asking my then boyfriend to leave the classroom, so that I wouldn’t have to look out and see him among the faces in the room staring back.  In hindsight, having a smiling, supportive face there would have totally been a comfort … but what did I know, I was young and dumb.  It wasn’t until I left school and began working full-time where I really began to be comfortable and confident in front of my peers and colleagues.  I was an Executive Assistant reporting to a boss who gave me the opportunity to be seen and heard from more, I decided to needed to beef up my comfort level with public speaking. That’s when I joined Ryerson’s Toastmasters.
Toastmasters is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere.  There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success.  Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping and avoiding filler-words like “ummm”.  I highly recommend finding a Toastmaster chapter that works for you, if you’re looking to build your self confidence and/or to get more comfortable speaking to groups of strangers –  I am proof it works!  And now speaking to groups of strangers regularly is what I do for a living.   Cra-cra huh? 🙂
 join-toastmasters-practice-public-speaking

FACT #6:  Sunflowers scare me!

There it is folks.  I have an irrational fear of Sunflowers.  I’ve been known to cross over to the other side of the street if I see a patch of these freighting blooms in someones yard all bunched creepily together.  Even worse – are those SINGLE GIANT BLOOMS.  eeeep!!!  Particularly those ones with the dark centres and the pointy petals. {shiver}
IMG_1357

FACT #7: Perfect 4.0 GPA

Remember those purple “Participation” ribbons they would give  out during track and field?  Yup … those were the ONLY ones I’d ever win, ever.  All those school achievements – I never won a damn thing.  I wasn’t particularly athletic and I wasn’t a ‘gifted’ student, so the typical awards to be won just weren’t in the cards for me.  I’d have to bust my ass twice as hard as everyone else, it seemed, to even make it on the honour roll.  The highest I ever got was 3rd on that list one semester in high school. Certainly not award worthy.  Sigh…
Since my folks didn’t have the money to send me to university, instead of staying for OAC (grade 13), I found myself the only 17-year old sitting in my college classes. I completed that 3-year program top of my class, winning the scholarship award for being able to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout the program.  That was the first award I’ve ever won!  Seems not being able to join all my friends in the pub, as I was just wee… wasn’t all that bad a thing after all. 😉

 ~~~~~~~~~
Ok.  There you have it friends.  7 random facts about moi.
It’s time for me to pay-it-forward.  As its name implies, this particular blog award is intended to be passed along to individuals and their blogs who inspire you in some capacity time and time again.   Since this describes every last one of the blogs I follow (I likely wouldn’t be following them in the first place if they didn’t!), I’m nominating the following:
Should blog awards not exactly be your favourite thing, not to worry, you are under zero obligation to play along. These kinds of posts are intended to be nothing but lighthearted fun, and should they not feel that way to you, by all means bow out of taking part in this one. I adore blog awards, but fully understand that not everyone does.
If you would like to take part, then here are the rules:
  1. Whip up a post of your own about receiving The Very Inspiring Blogger Award in which you link back to this post, thanking the lovely someone for nominating you (aka…MOI) and then
  2. Share seven random facts about yourself, and lastly…
  3. Bestow the award on a few whose sites you find to be a continual source of inspiration.
Happy blogging. xo
Dancing on the Pier
PierSo long summer ….. the last Dancing on the Pier swing series at Harbourfront Centre took place last week. I kept my outfit of the day relatively simply, yet nautical …swing dancing by the water and all 🙂
What I wore:  a striped high-neck tank (Reitmans); my navy anchor pencil skirt (Old Navy); and my red Airwaks (Payless)
