Holiday Happenings: The Ugly Xmas Sweater Party

Screen Shot 2014-12-09 at 6.19.04 PMNow that we’re firmly in the middle of December, there’s bound to be a “cheesy”, “ugly” “holiday/xmas/Christmas sweater party in your future.

Me personally, I’ve got three separate invites and opportunity to wear one all happening THIS week!!!  Knowing this, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect one…and I think I found just that ========> Ta-Dah!!!

A Xmas Sweater of Scottie Dogs WEARING Xmas Sweaters!!! OMG! Right!??

Not only is this sweater a convenient cardi …. the details of this knit are pretty amazing:

Those little red specs are actually knit HEARTS.  And the BUTTONS!!!!  Just look at these buttons!!!!!

AND I found it on FACEBOOK being sold for $10!!!!!  BOOM!

SCOTTIE DOG
LOOK AT THE BUTTONS!!!!! Little Scottie Dogs — seriously!?!?  The cutest things ever!

How I Got The Look: I’ve had this Dorothy Perkins mini dress for a while now –  I don’t often wear it on its own as it’s uber short and clingy.  I typically wear it as a top to show off the amazing shoulder pleats of this dress.  But this Christmas red dress paired with this “ugly” holiday sweater, over-the-knee boots (AdditionElle) and sheer black hosiery just seems to work, don’t you think?IMG_5945

Now, for the office party this week — I’m gonna swap the sheer hose for thick black leggings.  Ideally, I’d like to wear it with my plaid leggings to add more length to this skirt…if I can find them :).

IMG_5944

So, waddya think of this “Ugly” Christmas Sweater look? I DARE you to call it “ugly”…...I DOUBLE-DOG-DARE YA!!!!  😉   Classic line from my fav holiday movie A Christmas Story AND I’ve got double dogs on this sweater… I’m freakin’ hilarious!!!christmas-story-dare

Do you have any such holiday happenings to attend in your future?

If you’re looking for an excuse to wear one yourself, here’s a listing of fun ideas of how to incorporate this fun theme into your holiday plans!

Blast From The Past Vintage Prom

On November 28th, Rosie The Rebel – a retailer of retro and alternative clothing – hosted a fantastically themed party at The Great Hall, in Toronto:

Think back to the prom scenes in classic movies like “Back To The Future” and “Grease” —> **swoon**  What a terrific idea to recreate a ‘perfect night’ to live out your Vintage Prom Fantasy!

For those of us who were born in the wrong era, Vintage Prom gave us an opportunity to live out THAT fantasy Prom night!

Holiday Happenings: Vintage Cookie Exchange

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Ok…the holiday season is upon us and I’m sure you’ve got 101 places to be as invitations start filling up your calendar.   I aim to write not only about What I Wore …. but rather What I Did while wearing it.

So get ready for a flurry of Holiday Happening posts from me throughout the month of December friends 🙂

One of the first invitations was to a Vintage Cookie Exchange!

1910363_10152546309564072_1275063817048398572_n

If you’ve been following the blog, you know that there is a group of special friends in my life from all my involvement with the Toronto Vintage Society.  Among them are the crafty, kitchy, artsy, put-Martha-Stewart-to-shame few who’ve really helped me expand and discover new skills I never knew I had.  And this invitation was one of those moments of discovery!!!!

10440241_10154832497010184_2762593710696745344_n

The Mission:  Bake 8 dozen holiday inspired cookies to give away to the others who were coming to this shindig, plus a few to be plated, shared and enjoyed at the party.

IMG_5826

Now, for a chick (moi) who doesn’t bake, my immediate thoughts were …. DUN DUN DUNNNNN…Run Away! Run Away! in a Monty Python spirited way.

holy-monty-python-run-away-monty-python-and-the-holy-grail-12387443-900-609

But then I bought this amazing fanny midi skirt, which would be perfect for the get-to-gether …and so I decided I’d make an effort by trying my hand at baking! 😉

redskirt 4

I picked up this lovely skirt from Tatyana Boutique’s newest location on West Queen West during their BOGO deal.  Yup – Buy One, Get One FREE!!!  Naturally I had to scoop up this midi in both colours: wine and green.  Needless to say that these two skirts will be making multiple appearances over the holidays (stay tuned to the blog for that!) 🙂

Best part about these skirts: THE POCKETS!! Perfect for iPhone, cab fare and lip gloss … you know, the essentials!

redskirt2In an effort to step my up holiday glam, I decided to wear festive accessories like my gold xmas bows set I picked up from Target a few years ago.  Still kicking myself for not picking them up in the other metallic xmas colours they had at the time.  Sigh…xmas earrings accessories

How I Got The Look:  Black n’ white polka dot 3/4 length top from Reitmans; Fanny midi skirt from Tatyana Boutique; Xmas bows accessory set from Target; and shoes were thrifted

As for my baking effort and contribution … I’ve been told that peanut butter cookies are the easiest of all the cookies to make.  And with the help of Pintrest, I found the following recipe and added my own holiday twist and TRIPLED it!

Ingredients (needed for approx 3doz cookies):

  • 1/2 c. butter (unsalted is best, but salted works fine)
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • Un-wrapped Hershey Kisses, 1 for each cookie

I’ve even documented my efforts step-by-step for y’all 🙂

IMG_5758
Step 1: In the bowl cream together butter, both sugars and peanut butter. Add egg and vanilla. Step 2: Then combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Add flour mix to butter mix. Step 3: Refrigerate dough in bowl for 30 minutes.
IMG_5760
Step 4: While dough is in fridge, preheat oven to 375C, line your cookie sheets and  unwrap all your Hershey’s Kisses. I went with Hugs instead…the swirls looked more ‘holiday-like’ 🙂
IMG_5761
Step 5: Form into 1 inch balls and place them 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet.
IMG_5762
Step 6: Bake for 9 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are just a little brown.
IMG_5764
Step 7: Discard all the burnt ones – lol. This was my very first batch…seems the recommended use of parchment paper was of critical importance. Sigh…
IMG_5763
Step 8: Remove from oven, and press a Kiss/Hug into each cookie. Cool on cookie sheet for 5 minutes and then move cookies to cooling racks (or plate).
IMG_5766
Step 9: Put a dozen of them into individual festive baggies to give away at your Vintage Holiday Cookie Exchange!  I call these cookies: Christmas Hugs!!
10492245_1498558893760516_3428079132039143013_n
Step 10: Become Cookie Monsters with your cookie baking friends and eat as many as you can in a violently horrific manner!! #nomnomnom

This was my first cookie exchange ever – first time baking cookies ever, in fact.  And with relatively little work and preparation I’m now am able to offer a variety of lovely baked goods to family & friends at upcoming holiday festivities and gifting.  HAZZA! 🙂

Between all the shopping, parties, wrapping, decorating, and travel this time of year, most of us would put “more time” as the number one item on our holiday wish lists. So this year, why not kill two turtledoves with one stone by hosting a cookie exchange party?

Oktoberfest!

For years now I’ve been trying to round-up the troops to enjoy Oktoberfest in the K-Dub (Kitchener, Waterloo) – the 2nd largest Oktoberfest celebration next to Munich, Germany!  Sadly, I’ve failed every year. 😦

colour_hires

This year however, a few fun friends and I were determined to dig out our lederhosen and dirndls for Toronto’s 3rd annual authentic Oktoberfest party  – at Ontario Place!  Inspired by traditions started in Munich, Germany over 200 years ago, Toronto Oktoberfest brings a taste of Munich to the City as it captures the essence of authentic food, drink and merriment.

Naturally – we HAD to dress the part!

IMG_5100

A few of my table mates have been painstakingly sewing themselves authentic-looking dirndls to wear to this event.   I had my heart set on  wearing an old Halloween costume I had in my closet of a German Beer Maid.  Figured if this outfit won me 1st prize at my Office’s costume party – it was deserving enough to make a reappearance for this event. (woot! woot!)

Last year’s winning Office Costume Party outfit (the blonde braided wig was on loan) 😉

Buuuuut then as Toronto Oktoberfest continued updating their FB page as the big weekend arrived …. it seems that their waitress staff were all going to be wearing my EXACT outfit!!!  Le sigh… 😦
10592695_663113230452366_8490149375880778997_n

Needless to say, I was heartbroken.  We bought our tickets back in July specifically for the dirndl wearing.  Sooooooo I was DETERMINED to wear this get-up no matter what!

I figured my fancy buttons and a floral crown (Claire’s Accessories)  would do the trick 😉

IMG_4818
A few added button accessories … to look different from the waitstaff 😛

Floral crown from Claire’s Accessories (oh-so difficult to find in Fall)

There where fabulous hair inspiration in this article —- but y’all know how much I hate brushing my hair, let alone doing it.  In the end, I went for a simple double ponytail look.  Nailed it! 😛

IMG_4847

I was told that there was great importance and rules placed on how a dame ties the bow of her apron:

Rightside = married/taken.  Back = virgin.  Leftside = single n’ ready to mingle. As you can see, mine was tied accordingly 😉

Click here for deets on that.

Me with Liz of The Vintage Inn and Jacquie of TVS

I’m not typically a beer drinking kinda gal …. but this festival allowed you to taste a bunch of different ones, so I did.  You can almost pinpoint the exact moment when the beers started to kick in by the excessive laughing and blurry-ness of each snap….:)

IMG_5099

IMG_4865
As per usual, the Toronto Vintage Society ladies brought their A-game, all decked out … in proper German dirndl attire!              ps: I am NOT double-fisting my drinks.  I’m a lady!  I was kindly holding a pint for the photographer taking this pic …geez! 🙂

And then …there was DANCING!!!

Before vs. After ….. an evening of Oktoberfest!

Turns out we closed down the tent!!!  And stumbled our way out of the Ontario Place parking lot around 1am …. we were halfway to Brampton on foot (or so it felt like we were) before a kind cabbie picked us up and dropped us home safely.  ***Hiccup***IMG_4925

Overall, a fantastic time!  Can’t wait for next year’s Oktoberfest!

Would you be up to going if PPMeow! organized a table-o-fun?  Let me know in the comment section and let’s start planning some beer + costume + blog-reader fun!!!

Fall Double Feature: Sweater Glamour

I hope you’ve been following my series in collaboration with Cassie from Style-Cassentials.   We’re discussing fall trends this week – if you missed any of my previous posts from this special Double Feature, you can check them out here.

Today we are talking about cozy, comfy, cuddly Sweater Glamour!

Proofs-15

Last year, I ended up buying a few sweater dresses  during end-of-season sales, so I never really got a chance to maximize wearing them.  They are PERFECT for the Fall …

Proofs-16

What I love best about them is the fact that they are warm enough to allow you to leave home without a proper jacket.  I picked up this red caplet from Jack Lux vintage and costume pop-up shop on West Queen West.  (A few of my Toronto Vintage Society sisters have been styling their window mannequins over the last few months, click here to read all about that).  Adding this bright pop of colour really helps break up the taupes and browns of this outfit.

Proofs-17 How I Got The Look:  Snake print sweater dress from Old Navy; red caplet from Jack Lux vintage; brown leather purse from a vintage pop-up sale in The Juncton (small bowler bag from Guess); brown suède booties and double drop pearl earrings Reitmans and mother of pearl ring from my travels in Jaipur, India.

Proofs-18I’m really digging  this oversized poncho-esk sweater Cassie is rocking.  And that fringed purse…**swoon**.  Head over to Style-Cassentials for all the details on how Cassie has styled the trend.  Or check her out on Facebook here.

IMG_4639

Are you a fan of sweater dresses?  Think this might be something you’d rock this Fall?  Tell me what you think in the comments section…

If you missed my post on wearing leather, you can check it out here.

The Very Inspiring Blogger Award

Last month I was nominated for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.  Thank you so much Jacquie, founder & curator of the Toronto Vintage Society,  for the kudos and recognition friend.  I’m oh-so thrilled to know that the wee space I’ve carved out for myself in the blogosphere is actually being read, let alone being deemed as ‘inspiring’ and award-winning.   I am truly humbled.  Thank you 🙂

very-inspiring-blog-award_zps19a927bfUpon receiving this blog award, I must now share seven random facts about myself – dems da rules.  So here I go…

FACT #1:  Repeat.  Play.

Sometimes I’ll discover/rediscover a song, and I will replay it – on repeat – for countless hours on end.  Annoying, maybe. But I can’t help it.  There are a few songs that are hauntingly beautiful.  So beautiful, that listening to it once is just not enough.  They NEED to be played and listened to over and over for hours…to truly be heard.  Tracks that have this quality who have been on my constant repeat loop recently are:

FACT #2: I cannotgirl-swim swim

Yup.  I never learnt how and am somewhat afraid of the water.  When I was little my Pops took me to the public pool and gave me one simple instruction:  sit on the towel and wait for him to return from a lap.  Naturally seeing him dive in so easily, I guess I figured I could too …
He returned to find me being revived by a young lifeguard.  Needless to say we returned home where my mom gave him all kinds of sh!t.  To this day whenever I feel water in my ears, I freak out just a bit.  Now, this hasn’t stopped me from enjoying pools and oceans whist on vacay.  I’m an excellent wader and have mad noodle-floating-skills.  I’ve signed up for “learn to swim” workshops a few times at local community centres …however, the adult sessions have always gotten cancelled due to lack of interest & signups…and there is no way I’m going to join the 14-year-olds in the youth sessions.  Nope.  Not.  Gonna.  Happen.

FACT #3:  Facebook Game Addict

You know those annoying Facebook alerts you get cuz someone is asking for lives for some silly online game to unlock that next level …. well, friends…..that’s me.  I’m that girl.  I’m the one playing those kinda games.   Candy Crush.   Farm Hero.  Scrabble.  Words With Friends.  And my newest obsession: Cookie Crunch. This addiction has gotten so bad that for a little while I would wake up in the middle of the night to see if my ‘lives’ have been restored, so I could play some more.  Gotta get to that next level.  I just gotta.  Sick right?  I know.  Shameful, guilty pleasures of my life.

unnamed unnamed-2 scrabble-game-help.w654 candy-crush-saga

FACT #4:  I love punny jokes!  (Ha!  See what I did there…yup! I’m hilarious!)

Shameful, but true.  Those “dad jokes” that most groan at…. I love-love-love oh-so-very much!  Dunno what it is….but puns are great!  Not sure when I became so nerdy with my love of corny jokes.  I blame my day job.  As a corporate trainer, I’ve got to build and keep rapport quickly and throughout the day, usually with a bunch of strangers I’ll only ever engage with during said training session.  Sometimes I’m soooooo engaging as a facilitator that participants choose NOT to leave the room at designated breaks and lunchtime, leaving me to make chitchat conversation for a full 30-mins+.  Talk about pressure!  But with an arsenal of clean, cheesy, PUNNY jokes up my sleeve…I manage to fill the void of silence and get a chuckle or two out of nearly everyone.  Pitty laughs totally count! After all, it’s all in the delivery – and yes, I’m well aware of the fact that there’s more to being funny than just funny looking.  BA-DUM-BUMP!  I’m here all week folks! Try the veal! Tip your servers! 🙂
IMG_4457

FACT #5:  Toastmasters

Believe it or not, I was shy.  Shocking, I know 🙂  Standing in front of people to give a presentation made me sick to my stomach in grade school.  Public speaking was still very difficult for me in high school, and in college my courage to present in front of groups of people only increased slightly.  I remember asking my then boyfriend to leave the classroom, so that I wouldn’t have to look out and see him among the faces in the room staring back.  In hindsight, having a smiling, supportive face there would have totally been a comfort … but what did I know, I was young and dumb.  It wasn’t until I left school and began working full-time where I really began to be comfortable and confident in front of my peers and colleagues.  I was an Executive Assistant reporting to a boss who gave me the opportunity to be seen and heard from more, I decided to needed to beef up my comfort level with public speaking. That’s when I joined Ryerson’s Toastmasters.
Toastmasters is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere.  There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success.  Meeting participants also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop skills related to timekeeping and avoiding filler-words like “ummm”.  I highly recommend finding a Toastmaster chapter that works for you, if you’re looking to build your self confidence and/or to get more comfortable speaking to groups of strangers –  I am proof it works!  And now speaking to groups of strangers regularly is what I do for a living.   Cra-cra huh? 🙂
 join-toastmasters-practice-public-speaking

FACT #6:  Sunflowers scare me!

There it is folks.  I have an irrational fear of Sunflowers.  I’ve been known to cross over to the other side of the street if I see a patch of these freighting blooms in someones yard all bunched creepily together.  Even worse – are those SINGLE GIANT BLOOMS.  eeeep!!!  Particularly those ones with the dark centres and the pointy petals. {shiver}
IMG_1357

FACT #7: Perfect 4.0 GPA

Remember those purple “Participation” ribbons they would give  out during track and field?  Yup … those were the ONLY ones I’d ever win, ever.  All those school achievements – I never won a damn thing.  I wasn’t particularly athletic and I wasn’t a ‘gifted’ student, so the typical awards to be won just weren’t in the cards for me.  I’d have to bust my ass twice as hard as everyone else, it seemed, to even make it on the honour roll.  The highest I ever got was 3rd on that list one semester in high school. Certainly not award worthy.  Sigh…
Since my folks didn’t have the money to send me to university, instead of staying for OAC (grade 13), I found myself the only 17-year old sitting in my college classes. I completed that 3-year program top of my class, winning the scholarship award for being able to maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout the program.  That was the first award I’ve ever won!  Seems not being able to join all my friends in the pub, as I was just wee… wasn’t all that bad a thing after all. 😉

Ok.  There you have it friends.  7 random facts about moi.
It’s time for me to pay-it-forward.  As its name implies, this particular blog award is intended to be passed along to individuals and their blogs who inspire you in some capacity time and time again.   Since this describes every last one of the blogs I follow (I likely wouldn’t be following them in the first place if they didn’t!), I’m nominating the following:
Should blog awards not exactly be your favourite thing, not to worry, you are under zero obligation to play along. These kinds of posts are intended to be nothing but lighthearted fun, and should they not feel that way to you, by all means bow out of taking part in this one. I adore blog awards, but fully understand that not everyone does.
If you would like to take part, then here are the rules:
  1. Whip up a post of your own about receiving The Very Inspiring Blogger Award in which you link back to this post, thanking the lovely someone for nominating you (aka…MOI) and then
  2. Share seven random facts about yourself, and lastly…
  3. Bestow the award on a few whose sites you find to be a continual source of inspiration.
Happy blogging. xo

Sadly I never found this in store…so it seemed this frock was only going to become a apart of my life and wardrobe if I bought it online. Now, I’m not 100% comfortable buying something I’ve not tried on before, especially when it comes to spending at these particular price points ($100+ per dress).  Sigh…

But, since I own two already I felt fairly confident that my measurements and their sizing chart would make any online purchases a ‘success story’ 🙂

Truth be told that, outside of a German Beer Girl halloween costume (stay tuned for a reappearance of this getup as I just bought tickets to Toronto’s Oktoberfest – woot! woot!)   I have never purchased clothing online before.  My biggest concern or deterrent from online shopping:  Returns and Exchanges if something doesn’t fit right —- aka “The Shipping-Back Hassle”.

I tried to push Ginger (the name of the dress) outta my mind and continue living my life…to find an alternative Tiki outfit for this event.  But I just couldn’t.  I was in love!  Upon revisiting their site last week, turns out Ginger was on sale, a clear signs from the shopping-gods…and the ADD TO CART button was clicked and she was on her way to me 🙂

I ordered via http://www.cherryvelvet.com on August 1st and by August 8th a Canada Post deliver arrived with my name on it!!!!!  Clearly I was excited as you can see from my Facebook post below…

Seemingly in my zeal to bring Ginger home to me, I ordered a size 1X, instead of  the needed 0X…and instantly my “Shipping-Back-Hassle” fears were realized.  Lesson Learned folks:  double check, and triple check sizes you selcted and return/exchange policies before clicking ‘checkout’ … le sigh.

Lucky for me, minor alterations were needed to make this dress wearable for the big event were made,  without having to send this beauty back to Vancouver (that’s where Cherry Velvet is based), allowing Ginger & I to have a fabulous time at TVS’s TIKI LANI LANANI Party!

Are you thinking to yourself…. “But Irene, there are TWO lovely new dresses that hang in your closet… tell me more about the other cutie-pie frock?”

Stay tuned for that friends, in an upcoming blogpost 😉  xoxo

Pre-Opening Sneak Peek at Tatyana’s new Boutique in Toronto!!!

As much as I love vintage/retro styles ….. sifting through smelly racks of ‘truly vintage’ clothing in hopes that a gem-of-a-find will fit my petite-plus sized bod in a flattering way is difficult and often an uneventful task.  This is why I’m a huge fan of the world of vintage reproduction. 🙂

Toronto has been buzzing for months around rumours of getting the golden-era inspired dress company behind the Bettie Page brand – Tatyana!

Vintage and retro style lovers – from swing dancers to rockabilly fans – have been dying to get their hands on the full range of clothing since they were dreamed up in 2006. With sizes in both circle dresses and wiggle dresses going right up to size 4x!   The Tatyana company has chosen Toronto to be it’s 20th location AND it’s first international store….and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

About the Company – Based in Las Vegas, Nevada, Tatyana Designs, Inc. is a growing retailer specializing in contemporary designs inspired by the 50’s. The merchandise offered through boutiques and active e-commerce and wholesale divisions is a diverse mix of high-quality and attractively priced apparel, jewelry, accessories and gifts. Tatyana collections target the 18-35 year-old, fashion conscious, female customer, but women of all ages are attracted to the unique retro look.

“Our newest Tatyana boutique is situated in the heart of Toronto,” notes Tatyana Designs co-CEO Jan Glaser. “We continue to be gratified by the enthusiastic acceptance of Tatyana’s designs by women from all walks of life. This is especially true as we have an enormous Canadian following with thousands wearing our dresses representing a disproportionate percentage of our customers. Now we have the opportunity to honor their patronage with our first Canadian outlet in an amazing location.”

The Toronto Vintage Society are huge supporters of any new company that wants to join our ranks in bringing the retro inspired lifestyle to this city…and there is room for everyone!!! To find out more we reached out to the company. The lovely Hayley from the NYC Boutique and new Toronto Store Manager Martha made time to let the Toronto Vintage Society have a sneak peek at what’s in store.  Click here for the complete blogpost and interview.

Nothing screams summertime like tiki prints!

I picked up this graphic tiki dress from Forever21 recently — with full intentions on saving it for the Toronto Vintage Society’s annual Tiki Party this August. (Check it out this year friends….super fun times…add it to your summertime fun calendar!)  😉

Buuuuut I couldn’t wait!

Since my toes are a bit of a disaster and badly in need of a pedicure… I pulled the tags off this sucker and paired it with my black high-tops that I’ve been dying to break in since my Cross-Boarder Shopping Extravaganza .20140627-223228-81148041.jpg

This dress (in 2x) was a bit big on me – the length and the shoulder weren’t the best fit, plus turned out that all-day wear made the neckline of this cotton dress pretty droopy & wide.  Not cute.

But since these pictures, I’ve put it in the washer/dryer and am happy to report it’s a much better fit and has shortened up nicely.  HAZZA! 🙂

Farewell lovely cat-eyed sunnies.  Sadly, I’ve since misplaced these gorgeous sunglasses…sigh.  Ya’ll know what that means….an excuse to buy new ones!!!! 🙂

How I Got The Look:

Graphic button up Tiki dress, Forever21+ (Eaton Ctr); Black hi-top platform kicks, Torrid (Walden Gallery, Buffalo); Vintage Cat-eyed Sunglasses, The Public Butter; Grey cross-body purse, Michael Kors
